virus/spyware problem

Yesterday I got nailed by something that is messing my computer all up. It changed my home page and I keep running computer scans but can't get rid of what ever this one is. I already saved all my important info and transfered everything I might need to disk. What can I do to take care of this? Can I just remove everything from my hard drive and then just reload all my programs?
I would be thankfull for any helpfull info.

1. Google for hijackthis.exe
2. download and run
3. save the logfile
4. Google for "hijackthis log analyzer"
5. click the first link and either upload the logfile or paste the contents of the logfile
6. go to the hijackthis program and check anything that is nasty or possibly nasty
7. click fix

some people are like slinkies; they're completely useless, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs.

PM sent. If you have your data and the media to reload your operating system its worth a shot if the system is that far gone or was needing it anyway.
