Friend got a Ebay Dell laptop..it's locked.. password help..

A buddy of mine got a Dell Latitude D600 of Ebay and it's "locked".. the Bios password screen appears before the Windows even boots so I wanted to see if anyone could help me out with a "master" password or something that will work. We were online for hrs trying everything from searching and nothing worked. The other solution is to take it apart and short one of the circuits..buttttttt I would rather do it the easy way. Just PM me with any info. The person he bought it off of didn't know either, and of course he bought it "as is".. lately this trend has been increasing.. Thanks for any help!

crack her open, the MB should have a " bios reset" jumper.

Try
password

Or look at the MB like mentioned above and find the jumper to reset it to factory defaults.

Did you try leaving both fields blank?

Either way, sounds like your friend has a latitude problem and he needs a latitude adjustment.

Plug it in to a 220 outlet, that'l reset the hard wired jumpers.

Just called my brother who is a Dell Technical Acct Manager. There is a process but you have to talk to Dell level 2 support and it is based on the asset tag/serial # to get a "backdoor" password.

Also if you don't have a valid warranty/support your pretty much SOL.

Try and get the ownership transferred and call their support line.

With the C series there was a standard but the D series is unique to machine and even internally at dell they restrict access to that information/tool.

Good luck!

I was going to say the same thing. i used to work for dell. without the warrenty in your name dell will not help you out at all. You have to fill out a transfer form and the guy he bought it from has to do it and then it takes about 30 days after that sometimes longer. sorry bobby

Are you sure it is a BIOS password or is it a harddrive password? If you set a BIOS admin password, you should only need it to get into the BIOS.... If it is the harddrive password, you will have to just replace the disk. There is a way to reset the BIOS password, but you will have to crack it and short the pins. The only instructions I can find now, you have to pay for, but I thought they had been "leaked" at some point where you could get them free. If you want to pay for the instructions, they are here

A Service Tag is a unique five- to seven- digit alphanumeric code, but that's not important right now.

You jack ass

I know what a service tag is, I'm asking what his is. If it's a 5 digit code as opposed to a 7 digit code there is a program called latitude.exe that will give him the backdoor password.

ok, back to the topic at hand..

If you have a 5 digit service tag, it should be pretty easy

If you have a 7 digit service tag, it can be harder. The seven digit service tag is usually followed by -XXX sometime it's D35, etc.

If you post up your service tag, i'll see if i can get the backdoor password for you

sorry I couldn't help. I've unlocked a few before.

There has to be some sort of jumper/cmos reset, etc..

Look at that link I posted there's some good info on using a bios reset program. Also try google, there's some info on using debug to reset the bios as well.

only been there a few months. came in as a TAM but already made some contacts in the IT Risk Management group which is more what I was doing at the last job.

But they fired the CIO and brought in a clueless COO that told me I was too technical to be the ISO and knew too much and wasnt sure what to do with me. So when the McAfee recruiter contacted me and they made an offer I took em up on it.
