it's more than that, i can't "fix" windows media player 10 problems i'm having, because I can't download and reinstall. I've been running IE 7 beta, and I can't get the fixes for it in the Beta 3, etc...
I've hated Microsofts licenesing for a LONG time. Not being able to get updates is a big hinderence to any box. I remember at a previous job ( not mentioning names ;p ) none of our boxes were updatable ( like most small businesses ) and we depended on 'smart' browsing techniques, and firewalls to prevent our internal boxes from getting pwnd from external computers. One day, a client comes in with his laptop and had got more STD's than a Houston school with a 90% hispanic student population. The accountant chicks computer started having a timer counting down till reboot and she lost all sorts of crazy data. Then the shit storm happend. Mass emails, sql worms, all sorts of nasty shit started spreading through our data center eating up all our available bandwidth. It was a HUGE mess. Boss man wouldnt fix the problem with 'legit' windows, so we had to manually download all the patches from the website. Talk about a huge ordeal each "Patch Adams Tuesday". Since then we setup a secluded network to prevent a clients computer from fucking up everything again. Live and learn, glad I dont work there any more ;p
<3 my nLitened SP1 install. No updates post SP1. No worries about WGA, and how reportedly MS can remotely disable Windows without WGA installed/running (since you have to have SP2 for that to even be feasible)

which is great for getting updates, but not what i'm needing.
I did a little research, and it looks like my copy of the Volume License software I have is strictly for upgrades. So They must have loaded this computer with XP directly instead of upgrading from 2000. I might just go that route, and see what happens.
