Installed a new cd rom-rw, having problems

This is an old computer (hp pavillion) and the current cd rom quit working. I installed a new one and up graded to a rw version.(previous was not writable) The previous was designated as a "D" drive. Now with the new one installed it does not recognize the "D" drive. But you can put a cd into the new cdrom and it will open and read the cd. I put the jumper pin on the new one to "MASTER" and installed exactly like the old one.

Computer does have a zip drive that is jumped off the cd drive. (or vise versa) Any clues what I did wrong? Basically it works automatically, but I can't boot it manually. As always, thanks for the help

make sure the end of the ribbon cable is plugged into the cdrom, put the zip drive on the connector towards the middle of the cable... lets hope its that simple

oh err, or i think you can specify which drive you want as d and e, i thought it might be in the device manager but i looked and didnt see it on mine...

if it's too old

you may have to use cable select instead of master slave
