Anyone know the registry

It's time to pay the annual norton renewal fee on the NAV and I was curious as to if anyone knew where the registration key was and what number or key could be 'tweaked' to get the newest definitions flowing. Or maybe a different antivirus?

It would be nice if you didn't have to pay full price every year when you've already bought the software, just need the latest antivirus updates.

Norton antivirus does not keep the registration date on the local machine, it goes by when you connect. Once you connect to their servers, then it verifies the registration date, nothing you can do on your end will prevent that. Automatic definitions updates may not work, but I'm pretty sure they still allow you to manually download antivirus definitions and install them.

Screw norton.

Install free AVG (free.grisoft.com) and free zone alarm (firewall). You get most of what norton does without bogging down your machine...... running norton. I've got all but one of my machines off of norton now; got tired of having to reinstall it every time it got balled up.

If you have comcast they also offer a free copy of McAfee's personal edition.

Granted I might be biased as I start a new job working for them this week

AVG is really good .... only one flaw though, it does not tell you when you have a virus. You just have to scan every few days. Norton Anti Virus, Sucks the big one. They leave the back door open for the fbi (black lantern- which is keystroke logging) and the cia (oasis-converts audio signals in to readable text)

just roll your clock back 3 months before your subscription expired.. download the new definitions from their site directly www.sarc.com ... it will allow you to install.. just remember to set your date back to current!

Yeah luckily I won't be dealing with any consumer products. I'll be focused on enterprise accounts/products.

Norton detects what it considers date "tampering". My norton subscription "expired" 6 months early when I had a computer issue and wound up resetting the date/time in CMOS to the default on a boot. Bastards. I unstalled norton with a quickness and went with AVG free & zone alarm. Screwing with the computer date is gambling with norton.

As far as keystroke logging - go check out www.snoopfree.com for a utility to detect and block keystroke loggers.

I used to use Norton. There is a way to renew your virus definition subscriptions, but it seems the default is to upgrade to the lastest version. Can't remember exactly what I did, but it is possible. I think the renewal was like 5.95 or something.

I've since dropped all Norton products.

The subscription updates are about $10 less (like $39) than upgrading the whole product (like $49).

That sound about right on using their side to validate my side. I guess I will be going with the consensus and switching over to AVG. I already use the zonealarm so that parts handled as well.

Sadly I had forgotten about this thread. Thanks all for the input.

AVG is a solid product for personal use. I'm personally a Symantec fan (sorry stang2be), but I'm using free products for the most part these days. Less hassle.

no hard feelings. McAfee has offices in Plano and came to me. I haven't had any love from Symantec

I will admit the corp version is much better than the home stuff. I haven't tried the beta's yet for the next gen home stuff. I got the email with the links to get it but havent had time to look at it yet.

Up till I came to McAfee I had AVG on some of my home pcs and had put it on some family members too.
