Question 1080p TV folks - what are you using?

Anyone have a 1080p DVD player yet? I know they're $$, but I'm really wanting one for my new TV. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

There are only two players on the market, and it is 1080i max, not 1080p. BluRay players should be available in june/july and will be 1080p though however.

Actually, there are some:

http://www.audioholics.com/productre...o1080pDVD1.php

There are a few others out there as well - I was just looking to see if anyone had any first hand reviews.

Thanks.

The first link is a preorder. Second link is not a 1080p player. It upconverts to 1080p. I found one 1080p player (without upconverting), and its a $999 Sony. Only Blue-Ray DVDs are true 1080p. The HD-DVDs are 1080i and are easily upconverted by your 1080p TV.

What really sucks is that 1080p signals work with first gen 1080p tvs.

To answer your question though I have seen 1080i signals that have been converted to 1080p and it does look great.
Swing up to Best Buy, or Fry's, they might should both have a HD-DVD player demo'd. I know at Fry's they got the $500 Dollar Toshiba. It looks like an Harman Kardon CD player.

Yeah, the cheapest I've seen is $300ish - I'll have to find the model number again - those were just two quick google searches. Fry's has one that I almost bought for around $399ish.

I realize about the upconvert as well - you can tell a noticeable difference between the upconvert from 720p to 1080p.

So is there any readily available media recorded at 1080p yet? I have to say that I'm not completely impressed with my 1080i upscaling DVD player, but it wasn't a whole lot more than a decent 480p player. I mean it looks ok, but well, it looks okay

Have you tried on 720p? With my new Samsung, it looks MUCH better on 720p, than 1080i - generally every other TV I've bought has been the same as well. The picture is much more crisp.

I remember when we got the DVD player in (I worked there like 2 months ago), they told us that we wont get and HD-DVDs in for another month. SO we had a player but nothing to demo it with Fry's is the Ghettoist Electronic store I have ever seen.

Well they do have some things recorded in 1080p, but the media (disc) cost alot. The only thing in 1080p at the consumer level is Blue-Ray.

Depends on the store - you're probably talking about either the Arlington or Garland/Dallas store, which I definitely agree with the ghetto portion - but like I said in another thread - I don't really care too much about what the person has to say about the TV, as their knowledge is generally short on anything other than what the sign says in front of them about the TV/Media.

I've got two very good friends in the management area there that make things a little easier dealing with them.

Well I know the Arlington/Dallas store were bought buildings. The other stores arent as ghetto, but none of them know crap. They have the worst customer service at the other stores. I used to go to all the other stores to buy discontinued products. I had two salesman steal my friend's shopping cart!

Sorry.. I thought you referring to HDDVD or BluRay... not upconverting dvd players.

Pretty sure I did, but if I can recall, it didn't make much of a difference. I'll try it again to make sure.
