something local is fine but I'd always rather having some router/firewall at the edge to take the brunt of it.

Of those listed I would have to say McAfee cause I may be working there before long.

Software firewalls are worthless. Of their AV/Heuristics products, I like McAffee for a corporate environment. Their home products are not the best but they work if you pay for them. Independant research has shown that Symantec's products have the greatest overall effectiveness...

Internet security is all about prevention. Mcafee and Norton are both applications I would be using AFTER I got hacked. Setup a good firewall ( software firewalls are just as good as any hardware firewall ), use smart browsing/downloading techniques, stay on top of updates and dont run email attachments -_-

And what are those?

My Norton is expiring. I either need to buy an updated version of Norton, or I can get McAfee for free with Comcast. I don't mind having to pay for an update as long as my computer is better protected. I pay my bills online, do school work, ect..

i tryed that Mc Crappafee that came w/ Comcast and the viruscan updated then shut down and Mc Crappafee Tech Igmos couldn't find nor fix the prob. Go w/ ZoneAlarm if you have a choice or AVG Free.

Just my two cents.

I've been using AVG for years but last week I scanned my PC on Trends site right after an AVG scan and it picked up 8 more viruses. AVG picks up viruses that Norton didn't find.

Personally I'd go with Trend's system right now if you don't mind paying for stuff. AVG does a good job for a free system but I'd follow up with an online scan every once in a while.

As for firewalls, my router and the built in XP firewall have done good. Just stay away from sites like mscracks.com.
