Friend built computer issues

A friend of mine built a computer for me, and now it won't turn on. There is power to the case, it'll charge ipods, but it won't boot up. I can't get ahold of the guy who built it, had his cell phone turned off, and I'm not sure what steps to take or who to possibly take it to. Any advice would be appreciated.

It could be a million things. Be more specific. What happens when you turn on the switch?

Sorry, meant to say that. Absolutely nothing. Monitor works, everything is connected and plugged in, nothing happens.

No beeps? No indicator lights? Do the fans come on? You have to be very specific.

Most likley your power supply is bad.

He said it will charge ipods, meaning the usb ports have power.

Could be some type of motherboard failure.
Could also be a memory failure or possibly a corrupted windows install.
Might even be a virus that causes windows to hang during boot.
If the power supply went out....you would get absolutely nothing when you pushed the power button....no lights, no fans, no USB charging to the Ipod...no beeps, NOTHING....ZILCH.
If the lights come on and it initially comes on and then just sits there and does nothing....could be any of the above and could also possibly be a bad hard drive although normally you would get a message saying "boot disk failure".

I build computers on a frequent basis for friends and family and can diagnose almost any problem and can also do repairs whether its software or hardware.
Where you located?
If you want someone to look at it shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

That's not always true I have several power supplies that will run fans but the computer will not come on..Also you can hook these up to a power supply tester and all but 1 or 2 lights will come on. STILL A BAD Power Supply though...Btw I also work on computers only I make my living from it.

Thanks for the replies, now I'm really confused because I hit the power button on a whim today, and it fired right up. I guess I'll have to see what happens next.

If its intermittent like that, I am thinking power supply. I had a computer once that had enough power to keep the computer running but if you fire it up from a complete stop it didn't have enough juice to spin up the hard drives and initialize the motherboard properly so it would just sit on a blank screen. Next time it gets stuck off, turn it on long enough to get all the hard drives spinning, then off and back on again...see if that doesn't get it to post. If that is the case, replace the power supply.
