Server back up software...

I'm looking at Veritas (just bought by Symantec) is there any other good server back up software out there?

Server backup

Yeah, Tapeware from Yosemite

http://www.yosemitetech.com/index.htm

Been using Veritas BE several years. Support sucks & it's gonna get worse. Symantech f**ks up everything they touch. And BE itself ain't that great. Google 'translation errors' and 'Backup Exec'

for example: http://www.shmoo.com/mail/fw1/may99/msg00394.html

Still testing Tapeware but the app looks good & Yosemite has been WAY better to deal with than Veritas thru various incarnations (Seagate, freestanding, now Symantec).

I used BE for several years, and never had a problem with it. As far as I'm concerned, it's the gold standard in my book.......

The two I've seen in my years has been Veritas or Tivoli Storage Manager. Tivoli is much more expensive and used more in larger networks.

All of my clients have below 50 employees. I'm thinking Veritas should be the way to go. Many people have said that, that i've talked to.

Yep for that size I'd stick to veritas.

When using veritas, whats the back up format? I'm going to be backing up several differente servers to one external drive. Do i need a partition for each server (company) or can i format the whole drive as one and just use folders for each server (company)?

Are you hosting stuff for multiple companies? I'd just make sure you have the critical data needed and can restore it when needed.

Multiple companies. The idea is to have an external hard drive i can put the back ups on, either remotely or locally. But i was thinking i could just format the drive as additional space, and then give each company a folder. (the external will be backed up aswell)

We use both Tapeware and Veritas. Both are excellent products. I personally think the Tapeware is a litte easier to use and setup, plus its a lot cheaper then Veritas.

ok, i'm using backup exec 10d. I've got the servers setup and the destinations setup. I goto create a back up job... and the window that shows the data to choose (i'm guessing there would be a tree here) the window is BLANK... there is nothing there! how can i pick the data to backup if there isn't any there?!
