My comp finally died. Have a question.

Well I'm certain that it is only the fan that took a dump on me. And being that its an old P3 1.1Mhz its not worth really trying to salvage, so I was going to buy a nice pc from a retailer and then add the hard drive I have now, my question is how difficult is it to do that? I'm not looking to set up a raid array just want to have access to the stuff on that drive.

Your telling me. I've had this thing for years. Its a good time for me to upgrade and take advantage of the DSL line my company provides me here at my home office. Time to look into some home networking equipment now too.

yeah there should be no problem. When you get your new computer just take your old HD out, try to find a jumper on the HD that allows you to set the drive to slave. You want it to be slave so that it doesn't try to boot off your old drive. Install it into your new computer and just copy off the files that you want to save onto your new computer. You could keep the old drive for storage but if its a few years old I wouldn't really want to rely on it for anything important.

I may end up buying a cheap pc from Fry's but this site seems to have some nice stuff and I only need the pc I already have the flat screen monitor. My wife wants dell but I think that would make sure I couldn't add on my old hard drive.

You could plug the hard drive in the new computer, but chances are, unless you are using it for data only, you will have to reformat it. With a new motherboard and all, windows probably would not even boot (it may), but you will probably see the BSOD.

yeah, just buy a new computer with windows installed and ready to go... Just install your hard drive to get your data off of it, you will run into too many problems doing it any other way.

I ended up picking up a new tower from Fry's tonite. It was $680 with tax but I think its a much better machine. And if I turn out not being happy with it I can always return it within 30 days.

2007 GMC Sierra RCSB - It breathes better now and looks better than stock.
2008 Honda 700XX - Doesn't need any mods.

Its just a regular stick of 256mb pc133 ram and a stick of 128mb but the mobo I think is fried. Right before I turned it off I checked the performance in the task manager and the cpu was at 100% and the memory use was at 1.?? gigs.
