If you don't need or want an FM tuner the ipod is hard to beat.

What will it be primarily used for? If you're wanting one to work out with, than an Ipod will probably be the most expensive choice. You can get several cheap and good working MP3 players for under $40 - that have an SD slot available if you want more storage later on. It's all relative depending on what you're going to use it for.

you can always get a cell phone w/ an mp3 player. I have an ipod mini and it does the job great. It has 4 gigs. I also have a motorola v360 which I put a 512mb sd card in so i could use it as an mp3 player. Obviously the ipod will hold a lot more songs but the cell phone mp3 player is real convenient because you always carry your cell phone around. Drawback is storage, but w/ a 512 mb card you can hold at least 100 songs if not more. I guess it just depends what you want it for.

i paid 70 bucks out the door for a sandisk 512. has backlight, FM, holds 120ish songs, big buttons, etc.

i like it bc i can put it in my pocket and still change songs while i'm riding. I've even got to the point where i can put it on the radio, or back to mp3 without taking it out while riding.

I have been using an iRiver for a few years. But those Scandisk players look pretty similar and good too.

Ok, think about it in these terms.

How much music to you want to store on it.

If you have tons of music and you want to carry ALL OF IT with you, then the 30 to 60GB iPod might be the best option. I used to say that the Dell DJ was a good alternative, but Dell has stopped selling their larger models for now. They won't have a replacement until this spring. Historically, the Dells have had the same amount of storage, but for a lower price.

If you are storing fewer songs, then your options get alot better. There are several flash players that stand up well against the iPod shuffle. Sony makes a really nice one IMO. If you want 2GB or more storage, then the iPod Nano becomes a great option.

Do you think your travel might be rough on the unit itself.

The iPod Nano is based on flash memory. You'll want to keep it in a case to keep it from getting scratched, but if you drop it, it will keep working.

Do you want to watch video.

There are several media players that do video and music, but the iPod+video kicks ass. The screen is small IMO, but is otherwise outstanding. Also, you can buy an adapter and watch those videos on TV.

How much to price matter?

iPods are expensive, but you get good quality for what you buy.

Hope that helps.
