Play Station Question

We have a PS2 and my bf is wanting to get the internet connection to where you can play people online?! I have no clue about any of this and have heard about it and wonder how it works. Do any of you people have this feature and use it? Can you get it connected through any phone company or does it have to be through a certain company? I tried calling a company that would know about this but I am put on hold forever. Any information is helpful.

My brother does something like that on his PS2, I think he just hooked it up thru the internet at my dads.

Only problem is that we don't have a home phone, so no internet. I didn't know if I could get a phone line through just anyone or if it had to be a certain company.

I think she was asking if you had to go through the computer or just straight into the phone line.

Yeah, I think you have to have a home phone to have it. I think it can be any provider though.

I know that you have to have a phone line. Just didn't know if Play Station required you to go through a certain company or if it didn't matter how you do it. We don't know much about this so I wasn't sure how to go about hooking that stuff up.

All you need is a broadband connection and the network adapter for the ps2. The PS2 will be another network device, so it'll need an IP address. I don't think you'd wanna play it on dialup.

We did Verizon and they just include it on our phone bill.

No we have to had DSL. People were telling us that you had to have a phone line though. I'm confused because I don't know much about this stuff.

Listen... I am playing my PS2 online. I have a cable modem and the network adapter (much more but it's irrelavent). You don't need a phone line to play PS2 online. Get that out of your head.
If you have cable modem (broadband), you don't need DSL also. One or the other. If for some odd reason you wanted DSL then yes, you'd need a phone line but that has nothing to do with the PS2.

That helps. How much is all that going to cost me?

Playing PS2 online is free. There's no charge. The network adapter is ~$30-$40 and whatever you pay for broadband. If you don't have a router, then you'd either need to get one, or disconnect your PC when u wanna play PS2.

Currently, do you use cable modem for high speed, or DSL, or are you on dialup?

That's what I needed to know. Everyone that I have talked to told me that you had to have a phone line and said if no phone line then you won't be able to play it over the internet. Thanks for the info. I will pass that on to my bf.

We don't have any internet connection at all. That's why I was asking about all this to start it all up from the beginning. All we have is the PS
that he plays on our TV not the computer. He has been told about playing through the internet and wants to get all that started.

So you don't get on the internet at all at home? Are you replying to all this from work or something?

If you've got cable tv from Grande, I would check to see if they offer cable internet service as well. If they do, get it, so you don't have to worry about DSL and needing a phone line. Another option would be to see if there are any wireless broadband providers in your area. It works like cable internet, where you don't need a phone line.

Yeah, I get on line at work.

I checked with Grande and they don't offer it in our area. We would rather have the phone line too so we can set up our Tivo too.

Who are some good phone companies to go through that aren't extremely expensive?

If broadband (cable) is not available in your area, then start looking for DSL. You won't want to play PS2 online over dialup. i don't think you can anyway.
