Has anybody on here built their own MAME arcade machine? I'm lookin into it, and wouldn't mind some help with specs, dimensions, button set-up, etc...

Meh, seems like a waste of time to me. I understand the draw, but otherwise, don't see the purpose. Much easier to just install MAME and other emu's on your computer, and just pipe it through your TV. There's plenty of joysticks, gamepads, and converters for console gamepad/joysticks out there, to get just the right level of control that you want, without having to hack old arcade boards together.

But then, I never really saw the point in going to the arcades to play games, when I could play the same games at home or at a friends.

Your best bet would be to go to game stop and get a pair of Street fighter anniversary joysticks, or maybe even some of the pelicans, and get an ps2/xbox to usb converter. I'm in the middle of designing a machine right now with one of my old computers. An S-video out cable to a TV, along with 2 pre-built joysticks just seems like the easiest way to go. Now all I have to do is build a stand for the sticks and T.V., that houses the computer and a keyboard and I' ready to go. You can find a good deal on jamma controls and what not on ebay thought if you really want top build something yourself, you'll just have to worry about ghosting issues if you use a keyboard to build the controls.
