i have birch.net. its that satillite crap where you put some kinda antenna/transmitter on the roof and it all comes over the airwaves. its seems fast, but maybe somebody knows if its fast enough to play online games.(that WoW thread brought this up. after seeing that vid i wanna play now)

I have air canopy, sounds like the same thing

mine is fast enough for DFTFD, that's all I play. Here's a test site -- http://www.aircanopy.net/tech.htm

Mine is 349kps

I had birch.net and it sucked. I had a shitload of packetloss and the pings werent steady at all. Good luck.

Yes and no, it is FAST enough, but the latency is what is going to kill you. It will be pretty hard to play a fast paced game and enjoy it. You'll definatly get frustrated.

Dial-up is fast enough for WoW. I can't say for certain on the satellite, but I know latency has always been a big problem, making satellite less than ideal for online gaming. If the latency is better than dial-up, then you should be ok. I was getting around 300-500 latency in WoW on dial-up, and it was perfectly playable, though PvP might be a problem (I switched to broadband before I was high enough level to get into contested areas, so dunno how 300+ latency would affect it). Get about 50-200 on average with broadband.

Most people that I know with sat get 700 - 1500 ping times, and lots of packet loss. Dialup would be more ideal as its going to have much less packet loss.

ok the test site told me this

270 kilobits per second

33kilobytes per second

1MB file download takes about 31 sec

subjective rating: mediocre

so can i play WoW online?

You can play WoW, but I would try and stick to a non PvP server as you will DEFINATLY get frustrated from the lag.

Oh and one more thing, you might want to stick to a low population server as less users = less bandwidth to be used.

As far as switching providers, I doubt it as its a hardware/signal limitation. I would look into a wireless or microwave alternative.

the square thing above the dish and below the big antenna is my internet thing. its got a bunch of little LEDs on the back that are always blinking. can you tell from this pic if this can be upgraded to a better one for faster speeds?

Best to tread softly man... that's likely to get your post count set back to 0... or negative if Chris or Jose are feeling particularly nasty.

Wouldn't be the first time it's happened either

negative!? that would be weird and maybe even kinda cool, but only if it would never change from the negative
