How to network 2 computers to each other?

I have a new computer and want to transfer all the files to it from my old one. Burning them on a CD is out of the question so how can I set up a network between them? Both are Windows XP. Can I simply use a ethernet cable between the 2 or do I need a special one?

Get a cross-over cable.

if its just a perm thing either use the crossover cable as said above or just pull the hard drive out and slave it into the new pc.
