HD question

Ok i know this question will make me look green as hell but....

I have a dell demension 2400 with a 40 gig hd. As you can imagin with all the music and videos i have stored on here i'm out of room.

So, How should i go about getting more space? I don't want to have to lose all of my info. Is there a limit to how big of a hard drive i can use?

Get an external. They're pretty cheap at Fry's and on most online stores. They even have a 1TB available! Not sure how much you need for storage, but external is probably what you want to do with a DELL.

Not enough room in the factory case for cooling, or proper placement. I had to pull the guts out of my HP and put it in a different case for cooling. Actually, I think it looks pretty good now.

the guy next door has a dell and he got an external for that exact reason. My gateway had plenty of room.

One other option i sto use Norton ghost to image the old data onto teh new drive and just use one larger drive. Once it was done you would only notice the extra space. everything else would stay intact. If your PC came with a 40g be carefull buying a really large drive. your bios may not recognize larger drives.

Exactly what they said. Dell's aren't exactly your mod friendly gaming computer. Hell, nothing really is for that matter unless you build it from the ground up. Gateways (are they still in business?!?)were/are the sameway, no room and horrible cooling. Plus, with an external you have the advantage of transferring it to other computers in case you get a virus or want to give a bunch of songs/movies to a friend.

Get the 1TB from Fry's...I think it's about $800 now, lol.

yes gateway is still in business and the one I have is easy enough to mod. plenty of room inside and no troubles with cooling. The sound and modem are still cards not integrated to teh motherboard like most oem pc's. anytime you buy a low end prebuilt machine your going to run into those problems. If your going to buy a pre built get a Voodoo or Alienware. if those are too pricey get a gateway but get the high end gateways. not the $699 special.

I did not read everything, but external storage is the way to go IMO. Easily movable...etc...etc I personally buy laptops/desktops with 40 gig drives and rely on external storage almost exclusively for "storage" stuff and backups. Works well, although my 3.5 enclosure just takes another power plug. hehe Most, if not all the 2.5" enclosures require no external power, they are just powered by the usb port(s).

Take care,

My '03 Sold.
