Angry Problems with playing DVD since performing a Win Update

Did a Windows Update early last week and now my Media Center and Windows Media Player will not play DVD's. Odd thing is that my WinDVD still works fine.

Media Center is giving me the following error.

And Media Player is giving me this error.

Seems like I remember when doing one of the updates (Media Player possible?) it was asking me something about the Digital Copyright and I told it no. Now I can't figure where to go and enable it. Can anyone provide some insight on what I can do? I like WinDVD but Media Center is nice because of the remote I have. Help!!!

its a codec...you need to get on limewire or kazaa lite and re-download a codec pack...after installation...it should fix all of your problems...pm me if you need me to send you a codec's pack.

Somehow I don't think it's the Codec (it plays all my other WMV, AVI, MPEG's just fine). But I'll give it a try and post up the results. I honestly I think it has something to do with the Digital Rights Management.

Well it's MP 10 but I may try uninstalling it and upgrading again. Found some info about checking out the DVD Properties in the Device Manager to make sure it's set to Region 1. Never looked at that before but I will tonight. More info to come later.

LOL its not a codec. Its dvd's for crying outloud.

Jose, goto your device manager, and look in the settings for your dvdrom device, make sure you have your region set correctly.

Doh, looks like you already figured that out

That's what I was thinking to, thansk for sorta confirming it. Will post up later and let you guys know. Thanks for all the help.

On a side note I kept wondering up the whole Codec thing since I thought it was associated with video files and not DVD's. Thanks for the clarification

Doh!

DVD playback: Compatible DVD decoder software. For more information, see the MP3 Creation Packs and DVD Decoders for Windows XP Web page.

If you are not sure who's decoder you are using go to Start | Run | Type DVDUPGRD /Detect. This should list the DVD decoder installed. You will want to reinstall the decoder from your original media or download a copy from the manufacturer of the decoder. In addition, the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility can be used to see if you currently have an MPEG-2/DVD decoder installed if you are running Windows XP. From within the program you can then set it was the default MPEG decoder. If you see nothing listed, you would want to reinstall that application in order to reinstall the decoder. WinDVD and PowerDVD are two examples of software that would install MPEG-2 decoders that Windows Media Player can use.

Try updating your video card drivers, especially if your video card has a hardware dvd decoder (which it most likly does), and do the above

This is true, updating video card drivers is the next step if the above fails.

I've given up on it. I like the updates that were done to my Windows Media Center but something screwed up that damn MP. Oh well. Looks like I'll be formatting later in the week after I buy some DVD-RW's to back up with

It's my dvd audio in general that's fucked. It's the same with any player I use. I have to have the volume on my Logitechs turned ALL the way up to get barely any audio.....But, when I play music, or any saved video, its just fine!
