Comcast HSI

Anyone else been having problems that last several weeks since the DNS issues? My latency is all over the place. I am on the gold tier and would always get around 6100/710 speeds and ping times of around 10-20ms while online gaming. The last several weeks since the DNS issues my speeds fluctuate between 3200 to 4500Mb down and my ping times are anywhere from 10ms to 150ms. Tonight I was seeing nothing below 65ms for hours and sometimes up near 150ms. Then for the last two hours between 10 and 45ms. I have always used non-Comcast DNS servers because they are very slow. I also do some regular tweaking to make sure I am running at peak speeds. I have two other friends locally on Comcast and they are experiencing the same problems or worse.

DNS has nothing to do with latency. Just make sure you're not sending any traffic out, your upload traffic will directly affect your inbound speed. I dont know of any windows traffic sniffers that will help you, you're on your own on that one. Programs like bittorrent, or and p2p application will definatly cause you high ping times. I've also seen some spyware that saturates your upload speed as well.

If you want, ping abecx.net, and then do a traceroute to it and paste it up and I'll see if I can help you pinpoint the problem. My box is located in dallas and is on a 10mb connection with plenty of bandwidth, you should get 5ms - 20ms ping times depending on where you're at.

I know DNS doesn't affect latency. I am saying that since the major DNS issues my latency and download speeds have been really intermittent. Before that time it was rock solid. I use several different tools like 3d TraceRoute, Bandwidth Monitor, Net.medic, etc. I run Adaware and CounterSpy regularly for Spyware/Adaware. All my signal levels are good and my ping times to the gateway are great. In doing a line quality test I do see some randomly high ping times on various Comcast routers going to the East and West coast. My ping times on all the gaming servers I play on jump around from 10ms to 150ms regularly the last few weeks and that is not right. I play online with a local friend on Comcast and another on the east coast. They are having similar problems.

Here are the stats that I got from my colo box to your ip address. They look fine to me. Post up some traceroutes to some ip address you are having problems with and I'll see what I can get to help you out. I also have a box on comcast to so we can compare results.

I dont want to sound dumb but my speeds suck I have xbox live and the lag is horrible my speeds have always been around 2900-3500 which sucks since I am paying for the 6 gig upgrade, I am just woundering what this is "I am on the gold tier and would always get around 6100/710 speeds and ping times of around 10-20ms while online gaming." What is the gold tier and how do you get 6100 710 and how much does it cost, I've been trying to get my speed turned up but dealing with comcast is like pulling teeth. Thanks

Goto my website, abecx.net, and download a large video. Tell me what the max speed you get when you download it. Make sure your're not doing ANYTHING else on your network.

I worked with Comcast yesterday and we found some issues. I was finally able to convince them of my problem after sending them some traceroute results to various websites. My connection is superb local. I can download from your website and my work FTP site at 760k/sec sometimes peaking in the 900k's. When I go to some FTP sites out west or east my transfer rates drop into the 500k's area. ATI and Nvidia is a good example for me. Up until a few weeks ago I was always able to download from both of them at a minimum of 720k but now it bounces all over the place from 300k up to 650k. I also used DoctorPing and ping -t to test latency to different websites all over. I was able to email the Comcast tech the results and show him some hops that were giving intermittent very bad pings and packet loss. He opened a ticket to have the specific routers/segments looked at that were giving me the problems. It is very hard to convince them of problems when the main test is pinging directly to your modem which tests one route. Hopefully they will be able to do something but I am wondering if all the speed upgrades nation wide are helping bring out network issues that weren't showing up at the lower bandwidths.

I doubt I'll have any problems, I'll benchmark my connection and we can compare the results to after the upgrade:

48mb File download:
(496.00 KB/s) - `krjackass.mpg' saved [48,453,076/48,453,076]

8mb File upload:
(33.62 KB/s) - `nerd.wmv' sent [8,079,123/8,079,123]

Sorry, out of town all weekend. My modem is a Motorola Surfboard 5120. Those speeds look great and well worth the $10 extra dollars. Mine has been stable since last night so hopefully they got some things straightened out. The only thing better would be Verizon FIOS in my neighborhood.
