video card problem

Ok guys today when i powerd up my pc it made a real funny noise, i shut it down right away. I than open her up and power her up again, the noise was not gone, i soon found out that it was coming from the lil fan on my video card
(Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 ultra) does this mean that the video card is messed up? Or can i just replace the small fan? one more thing what could of cause this?
thanks

The fan is either going bad (brushes/dirt) or the blades are hitting something. Turn the fan blade by hand and see if the blades touch anywhere. Finding a replacement fan is usually impossible except directly from the manufacturer. I bought a replacement fan directly from ATI for my 9600XT last year when it started getting noisey.

What makes me mad is this video card is less than 7 months old. I clean around the area of fan and check if it was rubbing anything..which it wasnt. i should just call PNY tec support! thanks agian!

That's sucks. They may send you a new card if you charge it to a credit card and then they credit you the amount when they receive the defective card.

that sux, pny cards suck dick, saw TONS of them returned when i worked at frys. go to frys and pickup an aftermarket vga cooloer that vids the fx 5200, it will fix the problem and cool better at the same time. i think the vantec iceberq fits it, and i have one on my 9600.

PNY is really a great company, they have been a partner with Nvidia since the beginning, and I believe they are the only company that can manufacture Nvidia's Quadro Cards.

the quatros are good cuz they care, and they make good/decent ram, but their appliation of a home users video card is crap. if i saw 10 pny video cards and 10 bfg tech video cards of the same model go out of a store in 1 day, i would see 9 of the pny's come back and MAYBE 1 or 2 of the bfg's come back. i have a bfg tech 6800 in my machine, and they are GREAT. everyone i have ever met who owns a pny card has had issues with it, and the 1 i bought was crap.

Ok so i should just ask them for a aftermarket vga cooloer? vantec iceber?

Would this do the job?

i've had my PNY 6800GT for about 5 months, and it runs easily at 430/1150 with temps never breaking 75c (AS5 on core though), It has never given me any problems.

I had a PNY 6800GT for 10 months with no problems and a FX5700 that I overclocked until it fried. Was able to get a replacement under warranty without any problems.

The Iceberq cooler has a heatsink built into the unit so the stock heatsink has to be removed. I have attached an image of a similar setup so you can see what the final install will look like. The problem with your setup is the stock cooler also cools the memory chips on the card(why it is much bigger than the Iceberq). Going to the Iceberq gives you only cooling for the VPU. Most of the FX-5200 cards don't have RAM cooling or just passive cooling (bare heatsink/no fan). I am not sure how your card will do without the RAM cooling. You could buy a set of Ramsinks like this to help Ramsinks but your talking about another $10. Good Luck.

the iceberq you bought should have come with 4 copper colored aluminum ramsinks, just pop your current heatsink off and put the aftermarket stuff on.

The model he has is not a VGA specific cooler and doesn't come with the ramsinks. It is a chipset cooler (CCB-A1C or CCB-A1A) that can be used as a Northbridge cooler or VGA cooler. It comes with two additional heatsinks (a 27X27X6mm and 37X37X6 mm) to be used on different size chipsets. He needs four ramsinks that only come with the Iceberq4 and Pro4 so if Fry's has either of those models I would return the one you have and get one of them.

Unfortunately the store in Irving is one of the nicer stores but their restocking sucks. I don't know how many times I have been in there for something that they carry and the shelf was empty. The heatsink isle is a great example. Usually at least 50% of that shelf area is always out of stock. I mail order most of my stuff now.
