boot off of your XP CD and do a repair.
It's trying to check your system drive and can't find the autochk program.

After doing that it should come back up fine.

After getting it fixed, add the recovery console to your system for next time.

I had this same damn problem with XP/Home SP 2 on my father-in-laws computer about 2 weeks ago.

Would just hang at the hardware check. Reboot try to install again, hang at the hardware check.

Did this off and on for 3-4 times. Finally got to where it formats the disks and it would format then report the format didn't hold and it was aborting (bastids).

Ended up taking the computer apart and reseating everything and then clearing the CMOS on the motherboard. XP installed fine.

My 401K is now a 400K (was 301K)

Have you reseated all the hardware like 01WhiteCobra suggested above? Not completing the hardware inspection indicates a hardware problem. Remove everything except the essential items if you have add in sound card and NIC. Disconnect all but 1 CDRom and the main HDD and try again. Bet you have some bad hardware somewhere. How recent are the components, esp. the system board?
