USB Drive only recognized on some ports?

Ok this is driving me nuts. I want to be able to hook up my USB drive real fast to my front USB ports. When I hook it up, windows notices it, but doesn't know what kind of USB device it is. For some reason when I plug it in the back, it automatically knows what it is and creates a new drive in My Computer.

Which shouldn't be a problem, unless the usb stick isn't fully usb 2 compliant, and won't step down to usb 1.x to work on the front ports. Normally if I hook up a usb2 device to any of my usb 1.1 ports, it'll recognize and add it, and then pop a message saying a high speed device is plugged into a non-high speed port, and performance will be degraded... or something along those lines.

Yeah, most everything that's 2.0 is backwards compatible.

that's odd.

some usb drives require high power (i forget the actual term) and most front usb ports only support low power.

I would check the manual on the usb drive and see what power specification it is.
