I just got finished with a format/reinstall (3rd one in a month... been doing a lot of fucking around with XPlite to see what's safe and not so safe to remove... I really should get VMWare or something similar installed :-/ )
From first reboot, to format, to install, to up and running with sp1, and drivers ... 10 minutes. Maybe 15. It was so beautiful. I used nLite to create a new XP installation cd, using my original cd, and I also slipstreamed sp1 into it (and figured out why I couldn't get it to install the first time I tried this disc... I'm a retard), removed IE, and OE, (but had to leave IE Core until I can find a good alternative for managing services, disks/partitions, device manager, and any other mmc apps) the bad services like Messenger, Remote Registry, removed all the drivers that I don't have a need for, removed Windows Messenger, and the tour... and added some power toy tweaks. Also had it rename the admin account, as well as the documents and settings folder, change the xp installation from the graphical slowness to the not so pretty but nice and fast 2000 style installation, removed the luna theme (the default blue gayness... first boot came up as windows classic. I like that.)... and I forget what all else I did.
After getting it all installed, and running, before adding software, xp was clocking in at 80megs ram usage... I've never seen it below 150 megs, even on fresh install... and the windows folder was just over 600 megs (usually closer to 1-1.5 gigs). And that's mild compared to some of the guys on the nLite forums... someone's gotten their installation down to 193 megs, and their goal is 150 megs, like they did with 2000. In-freak'n-sane.
Now that I know a bit more about the process (and after I get VMWare going), I think I'm going to work with it some more, and remove a few more things, like Media Player, but leave Media Player Classic installed, and of course if I can find the replacements for the mmc apps, remove IE core from the installation as well. And maybe play with sp2, though I'm still leary of it... hell I'm only using sp1 because my firewall requires it. I also want to play around with getting drivers to automatically be installed. It's got the option to add drivers to the installation, just got to find out exactly which drivers/inf's to merge for my video card, printer, scanner, and anything else that might be possible. Would also be nice to have it automatically set LiteStep as the shell (or any other alternate shell, for that matter).
