That would be an OK laptop. It's got shared memory video, no diskette drive, and fairly short battery life.

We just picked up a really nice compaq for my wife's business at best buy for about the same money as that toshiba. It has a 1.6mhz intel processor (not a celeron) and has the same disk and memory size with wireless support. It also has a wider screen. It's a nice laptop.

We shopped around all of the local stores and there are some nice deals to be found.

Edit: the compaq was a 3.0ghz, not a 1.6ghz

I usually check this site: http://www.gotapex.com/deals.php I have gotten some REALLY good deals off there, I got a p4 3.2 computer off there over a year ago for 400 bux. Here is one of the deals they have going on right now.

HOT! Expires TONIGHT DellSB - Inspiron 6000 Widescreen with Celeron M350 Processor, 15.4" WXGA TFT, 512MB of DDR SDRAM, DVD-ROM, 30GB HD, and 1 Year Wrrnty for Only $674 with FREE Shipping! (Posted by: Lights)
I have never seen a true 15.4" TFT notebook drop to this price before! There`s NO rebate to send in and this thing comes in at just $674! I would definitely get on it while they`ve got it running because they`ll raise it back up to what it should be soon. It comes with the Intel® Celeron® M Processor 350(1.30GHz/400MHz FSB), a nice wide 15.4" WXGA screen, FREE upgrade to 512mb of DDR SDRAM, a DVD-ROM, a 30GB hard drive, Windows XP Home, an integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem, and a nice full 1 year warranty! I would add the Dell® Wireless 1350 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps) for just $15 as well.

The compaq was on sale for about $1200. Not for sure about the battery life. And it was a 3.0ghz CPU not a 1.6mhz. It stood out as a heck of a deal compared to the other laptops that best buy had for sale at the time,

The only thing to be aware of buying off the shelf is that most of them will have to be shipped somewhere to get fixed; about 2 weeks. This is important if you use the thing to make a living. Dell offers next day support for the first year but you pay out the a$$ for it with the purchase price.

Price range would help alot.

I'm hooked on Toshiba laptops (I've owned Compaqs, Dells, Gateways and Toshibas).

I have one on order (don't know who from, I let some else handle that)...

Toshiba P35-S611
Pentium Mobile 4, 3.33 Ghz
512MB (upgrade to 1GB)
100 GB HD
17" WXGA
ATI Mobility RADEON 64MB
LAN/Wireless
4x DVD
Window XP Pro

It was around $1600, battery last about 2 hours. It's a lead weight at 19.5LBs but it acts as a desktop as well.

damn, a 20lb laptop?

i'm really not sure as far as how much i want to spend...probably in the $1k area or around there... i've been looking at a few used ones, so i may go that route. she really doesn't need a lot, just ~512mb of ram, a decent processor, 40gig + hd, dvd/cd rw, etc... hopefully with windows xp & office...

Brad - I work at IBM and they generally give us a pretty decent discount for our families and freinds.

I can get a r51 for a little over 1k.

Shoot me a pm if you're interested and I'll send you a link to the employee purchase site so you can check out what all is available.
