Finally bought a new computer

AMD 3000+ 64bit Socket 939

MSI K8 RS480M2-IL
Socket 939 ATI radeon Xpress 200
4DDR400 3PCI 1PCI-EXPRESS Box

2x 512mb Crucial Ballistix pc3200

WD Raptor SERIAL ATA 74GB 10,000 RPM 8mb cache

Antec Phantom 350W Fanless ATX Power Supply

Titan TWC-A04 Internal Water Cooler ( cpu/gpu )

Asetek HD Water Cooler

2x Shinetsu Heatpads $3

16X SONY DRU710A DVDR $63.40

ASPIRE XNAVIGTOR Case 450W

VGA XFX GF 6600 GT 128MB PCI-X

One of the goals with this computer was to make it fanless, I acomplished the goal to an extent, the only fan on the system is that of the radaitor for the water cooler. The last of the parts ( case, video, and dvdr ) are supposed to be delivered monday. I cant wait to get all the parts in and start building this up!

Now before any of you clowns that think you're gods gift to computers, the power supply in question is 88% efficent which is one of the best on the market as far as power consumption vs power output. If you ever read the specs at most of the 400watt power supplies they are normally between 65% and 75% efficent.

What are you talking about, the 6600GT is the best video card on the market for under $200.

And yes, I will be gaming.

I also have the GeForce 6600GT on my AMD 64 3300 and have had no problems with any game whatsoever. I'm playing Half Life 2 maxed out with no hangups. Scored a 8200 on 3Dmark05 with nothing overclocked. The 6800 is a great card but for 500 dollars why purchase it when a 6600Gt can pretty much run anything out there coupled with a decent system. Just my two cents.

It amazes me that people actually pay upwards of $500 for a video card that will be trumped by the next best thing (also for $500) within 6 months (also at which time that card that they just HAD to have at $500, will be more reasonably priced around $200 since it's no longer top of the line)

The most I've ever paid for a video card was $180, and that was for my most recent card. I can think of so many other things to spend that extra $320 on that I saved by not buying the $500 card that might net me 10 more fps assuming I'm not already running 60fps in whatever game I'm playing.

I agree with you, although I'm definetly interested in ATI's new 512mb video card that they are soon to release. Nonetheless I still can't see spending 500 dollars on it or possibly more.

You only got the 3000

I put a 3400 into an ASUS mobo for a desktop system. I really like the AMD 64 chips.

Had an interesting thing happen recently. On reboots after the system had been up for awhile the mobo would bitch about the cpu being too hot. So I looked at all of the fans and made sure the cool and quiet thingie was turned on in the bios - wtf Everything looked good.

I finally took a can of compressed air and hosed down the cpu chip and a cloud of dust came off the heat sink. It wasn't obvious at all that there was that much dust on the sink; it looked pretty clean.

Fixed the problem too. Something for ya'll to watch for.

Speaking of cooling and AMD 64's, Just purchased mine which is:

AMD Athlon 64 3300
1GB ddr3200
GeForce 6600GT
Thermaltake 480w psu

Brought it home start to play Half Life 2 kept crashing. Installed Battlefield Vietnam, kept crashing. I'm getting angry because these games ran decent on my older system which was just a P4 1.4 w/ 512mb, ATI 9600. So I start updating all my drivers to see if thats the problem, still crashing. Someone mentioned overheating but I'm thinking, a brand new system overheating? So I check the temp in BIOS and sure enough at idle it was standing at 60c. So opened up the side case and pointed a fan at the motherboard, temps dropped to 43c and all my games ran perfectly. I just went and purchased a copper heatsink with two fans and temps went to 43c, games ran perfectly. Shut the case back up, crank up my games and they start crashing again. Opened up the case, pointed the fan at the motherboard again and tried to play some games, they all ran perfectly. So I think this case is choking my system as far as temps are concerned.

Oh yeah MikeB what cool and quiet thing in BIOS are you talking about. Heard about it but haven't checked it out yet.

Thanks

Its basically an option that will underclock and then lower the rpm's of your cpu fan so the computer runs quieter while at idle.

Mike, I bought a 939 socket cpu, I hope you did as well. I went ahead and bought a slower cpu in anticipation for the dual core amd64's to come out and then purchase one of those, which they will most likely be 939 socket. I also did it so I could buy the best ram on the market for my motherboard, at $300 for 1gb, it was rather on the expensive side but the benchmarks compared to the other ram in its range, its WELL above the rest.

That must be a typo. Is it 3DMark03 score? 3200 is a more believable score for 6600GT.

Its not the case, its gotta be the cpu fan. What RPM is it spinning at?

Sami

Yes that is a typo it was 3200, tried today with AA/AF off and scored a 3417.

Abecx:

The cpu fan is running between 1800 and 1900rpms. Does that seem to slow? I still have the floor fan pointed at it and temps at idle are 39c.

Thanks

very slow, they should be at LEAST 3000rpms.

My 3200+ 64bit at work is at 3300rpms ( amd stock fan )

Sorry I read ahead of myself.
I saw this, ATI radeon Xpress 200, and thought X300 or something, I had a brain fart. Yeah the GT is one of the best cards under 200 dollars, I've heard alot of people having problems with it though.

Mines a socket 754.

The dual core upgrade stuff is pretty cool though. I put this system together about 6-8 months ago and the only other AMD 64 chip I remember at the time was a "FX" chip that was hideously expensive.

I'll get my money out of it though. This system replaced a P2-233
