networking help

I have a D-link router and everything works just fine. But i got a laptop not to long ago and it has a wireless B built in. So i got a linksys WRK54g router. It says it will do both B and G. Well i plug it in and i can access the internet, and can get inside of the router to look at the settings. well my laptops not picking up anything at all. and then all of a sudden the router wont work anymore, No internet and wont let me change any settings. But the lights on it are still blinking like its getting signal. I unplug it for about 20 seconds and still does the same thing. So i unplug it and come back hours later and it does the same thing. What's the deal?

did you change the factory default settings? perhaps someone got connected to your device wirelessly and changed your admin password and router settings?

I'd check with the vendor to see how to reset it to the factory default config and then make sure you secure it once you get it back up and going

RTFM.

Go into your router's settings (http://192.168.1.1/index.asp) and make sure the wireless mode is set to mixed (under wireless tab). I have a G only network, so it's set for G Only, since you have a B laptop, you could just set yours to B if it's the only user connecting to the router.

Set the SSID, set broadcast to enabled. And protect it.. set your security mode (I use WEP, 128 bit)

Try again with your laptop. I just set my house up with 4 computers, and an Xbox all wireless, and it took me a bit, but it all works flawlessly.

it was already set with everything you've said above. But sometimes the router doesnt even work with my regular computers wired. and then i unplug it for an hour and it will work again for about 5 mins.

Have you checked the computer for viruses? Sometimes that's the case as it was for my friend just recently. I disabled system restore, cleaned the virus and it was back to normal. Before it acted just like yours.
