You need get a router and it will network your computer and xbox together, so you can share the connection. You will also need another cat5 cable for your xbox.

Since you have dsl, you can't do that because of the PPPoE or whatever that shit is called. I have comcast cable, and you can do that with cable. Dsl has a protcal(sp) called PPPoE that is required to login. Thus, you must have a router to do that.

It's one or the other, not both. You could also install another network card in your pc and configure it for internet connection sharing, in effect making the pc a router. Personally I'd recommend a real router though, they are cheap now and will act as a hardware firewall if you configure it properly.

I can connect to xbox live if I disconnect the pc. If it doesn't connect, xbox prompts you for a troubleshooting page. This is where you can input and turn on/off the PPOE settings. That works well enough for me.

Sometimes it asks, then other times it doesn't. I don't know if it's the modem or the box. Most of the time now it hasn't asked me for it.

i just still recommend just getting a router, usually way less than 30$ this days. It will be way easier plus, you never know if you have a lan at your house.
