Computer gurus, need your advise!

I'm thinking about buying a new computer and i found one that has the following data. Can you guys/gals tell me if this thing is worth a damn?

Gateway computer $945 w/o monitor

Pentium 4 300 Ghz (What does this mean?)
1024 MB DDR SDRAM (What does this mean?)
200GB HD
8X DVD+/RW
48X CD Rom
8 in 1 media reader

I'm not very computer literate and any info would be helpful.

Thanks!

I interpret the P4 "300 Ghz" as a 3 Ghz machine, which is pretty quick. Is this machine brand new? What is the graphics and audio card in it?

Personally, I think you can do much better. What speed is the HDD? (7200/5400 rpm?)

Chill man. I believe you and I remember it being mentioned. Lose track of these things when overseas.

yes please post up the model number
is this price just for the cpu ?
and it makes a huge difference in the speed of the hdd
5400/7200/10000/15000

the cheaper price may mean a very older unit hd running at 5400...it which case ...it wont be very fast at all .....

want pc are you on right now ???
can you upgrade that one ?

i agree with ceyko...i beleive you can do better if you ask around and take your time ......

There is not an Intel P4 300. I would assume a 3Ghz also. There is a P4 520 through 570 which range from 2.8Ghz to 3.8Ghz. For the price you can do better building yourself. Most big name companies cut corners in many places to cut costs like hard drive speed, chipset, video, sound card. Just because it is a P4 3Ghz doesn't always mean it is a high end system. Plus it will be almost impossible to upgrade later.

After thinking about it the Celerons did come in the 300'ish model range. I think they started at 315 on up. If it is a Celeron don't waste your time.
