wireless at home is probably easier/cheaper than running cat5 and speeds should be fine for what your probably doing. Just dont leave your access point wide open. Read up on how to set them up properly so you arent sharing your internet connection with complete strangers.

Fuck wireless, I've gotten tired of using shit thats easily hackable, especially with the kinda of friends I have I would never use wireless ( at least not in its current stage of development ). Wire connections are much faster and way more secure, they are cheap too. You could wire an entire house for $70 - $100 in a few hours, about the same price for a complete wireless setup.

I would say go wired unless you are using a laptop... then you will want the freedom of walking around the house....

but wired is cheap easy and much more stable connection.

It depends if you are upto running Cat 5 through your walls or not. If you are just going to have cables running everywhere then I would go wireless. Thing about wireless is anything driving down your street can connect and do whatever they want on your internet connection. All the need is a wireless card.

well, all you need to do is setup an SSID and unless someone knows it, its offlimits.

with certain ISP providers though if you enable that it will also mess with your internet connection. The ssid can be discovered by sniffing. The SSID is part of the packet header for every packet sent over the WLAN.

i use them both. wireless is not as fast as wired, but it still will more than handle anything you want to do with it. if you have a desktop i would just say go with wired lan. running wires is rather easy if a little time consuming (a single cable can be run and dropped within an hour). if you run the wires i would recommend you using quick conect ports with jacks. you can pick this up even in home depot. a simple wire crimper runs about 18 dollars that should do for cat5 and they have strippers for cat5 to take the outer shell off, these are a few bucks. the most common wiring scheme is "B" and you can find it on the internet if you want to do your patch cables as well.
you could do a mix by getting a wireless router (these have both the wireless capability and a few ports for patch cables). the last thing about wireless to consider is range, it is pretty decent with G.

I have both, and it's pretty annoying that Wireless B and G receive all sorts of interference from 2.4 ghz phones, and the wireless network interferes with my wireless mouse. I like having it for my laptop, but the desktops are wired and run Gigabit LAN...no stinkin' 108 Mbps around here!

Thats where trustworthy computing has its problems, its not as safe as you would think, even if you set )A&[email protected]"l'asd]f as your SSID.

Takes less that 15 minutes to crack a 128-bit WEP encrypted wireless connection that doesn't broadcast its SSID with a current PC nowdays.

Go wired unless you dont care about people messing with your connection. Or you have the cash to buy some propriatary wirless security stuff.

Thanks for the input . I thought it could easily get hacked , signals would be weak or just fade out at times. Its just a pain in the ass to go wirelss I dont have a laptop and If I ever do I'll just walk around the house with a cord just like back in the days before everyone could afford a cordless phone ..

Thanks Everyone ....
