Problems with installing RAM

Picked up a stick of 512 MB DDR 2100 for my Desktop and when I installed it my computer it won't boot up. Removed it and it works fine. Any ideas?

You mean as in brand? No, it's a used stick but I'm not sure of the exact specs other than it's 512 MB DDR 2100 which is what my computer has to.

Did you try the 512 independent of the other? If it won't boot by itself, you likely have an ornament...
Good idea, I'll give that a try later and report back. It's just a bitch working on the case, everything is crammed in there and I had to unplug the HD and a few other things to get in there to insert the RAM

RAM is picky. I picked up a stick of 512m Kingston DDR for my wifes computer running a SOYO Dragon Platinum mobo and it rejected it but when I pulled the Mushkin 512m DDR memory out of my computer with Epox mobo it worked fine in hers. So I put the Kingston in mine and it worked fine. O well now she has the badass heat sinc'd memory and I got plain ass Kingston.

Isn't DDR required to be in pairs? Or am I thinking Dual Channel DDR?

Have you tried it in the system just by itself?

you're thinking of dual channel.

DDR is double data rate

There is also ECC or Non-Parity. Also Registered or Unbuffered. Most motherboards will use either ECC or Non-ECC but not necessarily so with Registered or Unbuffered. Also mixing DIMM's from different manufacturers can cause problems due to differences in chip speed and CAS Latency.

go to www.belarc.com and dl advisor. it is free and will give you detailed specs on your computer. once you get that, go to www.crucial.com and use their pull-down menus to look for your system/motherboard. once you find that they will tell you exactly the type of memory that your motherboard can support.

not all motherboards will support all memory types, there could be a difference with what it accepts for CAS Latency, speed, ECC, parity, and organization/size of the memory sticks.

As far as my problem, just to clarify it will not boot or POST. So no errors, nothing.

Gotta also tackle another problem with another computer at home where the OS somehow got corrupted and I'm having problems reinstalling XP

Haven't tried it out yet bro. Hopefully this weekend, just ran out of time the past couple of days to try it out before heading back to Boston.
