Graphics Card Suggestions?

I am looking for a new graphics card but no nothing about them. Anyone have suggestions? I dont want to break the bank buying one, but I want one that will last for a couple years worth of games.

ASUS nVidia FX 5700 128Mb. not too pricey and it will handle anything on the market

ATI 9800 Pro 128MB is decently priced atm @ $150. 9600SE is your budget card @ $50.

Yeah don't buy it from companies like Saphire atlantis. If you just get the ATI retail version, it will be 256bit and you will be fine. You can always check after you get the card (just make sure the store you got it from has a return policy). The memory chips on the 256bit should make an L shape, while they are a straight line on the 128bit version. Also, you can download SiSoft's Sandra for free and it will tell you.

I got the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, and it handles everything I've thrown at it(Doom 3, etc...), but if 9800's are out go with that

The 9800s are already old technology :P But they are still, imo, the best bang for the buck in higher end video cards.

I would go with the 9800 Pro with the recent price drops. I just got rid of my 9600XT to buy a Nvidia 6800GT. I loved the 9600XT and I recently built a system for a friend with the 9800 Pro. I have had numerous cards from both ATI and Nvidia and I can say I prefer ATI just due to the fact that they give full support to the MOD market and work directly with many Driver Tweakers. Nvidia goes after just about anyone trying to supply a tweaked version of their driver. I love the graphics of my Nvida card but it has been over 3 months since the last driver update. ATI has come out with three in the same time frame.

NVidia is definatley slowing down with the updates with the Geforce series.
As for the price reduction, how much is the 6800GT?

I am refering to the price drops on the older cards now that the X800's and 6800's are out. You can get a 9800 Pro online for around $140. Was $249 eight weeks ago.

Gotcha! I currently have a GF4Ti4400... I don't know what card would be worth the upgrade price...

About the Nvidia Driver thing. Supposedly they are going to release a new driver (official) a week before (or during) the Half Life 2 release...
And they have released a NEW official driver on there web site, but it is only for Windows XP MCE..

It's funny because the current driver is 61.77 but you can go to Nvidia's FTP site and download several later beta versions that are WHQL certified. There are about ten version listed after the 61.77. I have had the most success with the 66.77 dated 10/31. It has been out several weeks but just WHQL certified on 10/31.

That's the one I'm using. Never thought to look under XP MCE. I downloaded it off their FTP site hereNvidia FTP Site. Another site for video card drivers or anything else video card related is GURU3D. Here is a link to their Nvidia download section GURU3D Nividia downloads .

You have to be careful though, most are trying to sell you the 128bit version.
