Local Computer Shop

What's a good local computer shop to buy parts at the cheapest prices. I buy quite a bit a Frys but their processor and memory prices are a little high. The two shops I used previously have changed owners and only build cheap desktops now. I do mail order some but would like a place local in case I get a urge to run out and buy now. Thanks.

I've resorted to most stuff online now. Not too many good local places. Most just seem to want to sell the low end cheap complete systems to people who don't know any better.

I also buy most of my parts online. I don't trust the shit they sell at Fry's, that's for damn sure.

I'll probably just resort to mail order. I have had a lot of problems with stuff from Frys. I have returned several items myself and they just slap an open box sticker on it and put it back on the shelf without testing. They are good for accessories and mod items but nothing else.

I cannot heap enough praise on New Egg.. I purchase 95% of my parts there. No sales tax, shipping is cheap, sometimes free. Only purchases I make at Fry's are small "need it now" stuff, or if the price beats the egg by a big margin, like the Raptors I got for $69 after rebates, much better than egg's $113 price..

Exactly why I don't buy shit from them. I HATE Fry's.

I'm with TurboTodd though. I've bought alot of stuff from Newegg.com, and I love 'em. Good prices, cheap/fast shipping, and the parts always work.

www.pricewatch.com if you know what you are looking for go there. it searches like 100 dif web pages for best prices (with shipping price included) I use that and new egg to find the best brands at the best prices.

How's the 6800GT working out?

I'm shopping for a card now, wondering if I need the GT or if one of the vanilla NU's or Limiteds will work for me.. Rivatuner now supposedly softmods the NU's to GT pipe levels...

That could work..but it has to be a vanilla... So it could be a good investment...Another thing about the vanilla's is this..
most vanilla's have DDR1 memory..and "most" GT's have GDDR3...so faster ram, and already unlocked pipes. Higher clocks, I just think it's a better way to go..but that's me
As of right now, I think the best way to go is with Nvidia, BUT there driver support is dying big time!!! Not an official driver released from them in like 2 months..PLENTY of leaked beta's but no OFFICIAL...Also the one on there site isn't even WHQL'd...

I moved up from an ATI 9600XT to the PNY 6800GT. The card is a reference card so it is nothing fancy but it still rocks! I flashed the bios on it to the newest bios and I am overclocking to Ultra speeds with no problems. I have not flashed it yet to open up the other four pipelines because I don't want to screw with my warranty. I play Battlefield Vietnam quite a bit and I run it at 1600x1200 with all settings at max and still get 60 to 70 fps. The only thing that disappoints me is Nvidia is very slow to come out with driver updates. The current version was released in July and since that time ATI has come out with three new drivers. I am currently using a leaked beta driver. I have a friend that built the exact same system with me except he now has the ATI X800 Pro and it doesn't come close to my 6800GT.

what driver are you using???
none of the leaked beta's really show the "true" power of the 6 series cards...
hopefully nvidia will release an official whql driver soon!!!i'm tired of waiting and don't really trust beta's...(cept 65.73), but i use 61.77..

i have a 9700 and the only reason ATI comes out with drivers so often is to fix all their fuck ups, the newest one they just released fucked everything up on my pc. went from 100 fps constant in cs to 40 and down to 20 in some places. bastards.

Right now I am using 61.82. I have tried all the other betas and got some good 3dMark05 scores but games wouldn't run very well. I am very pleased with the 61.82 and they are WHQL but not an official release yet. I downloaded them from www.guru3d.com. I loved the Omega Drivers when I had my ATI card and I am hoping he will come out with his version of the 61.77 for the Nvidia soon.

I ended up ordering a 6800 Limited Edition from NewEgg today.. We'll see if I hit the lottery when it arrives... Can't beat the price.

eVGA Limited Edition nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Video Card, 256MB GDDR3, 256-Bit, TV-Out/Dual DVI, 8X AGP

Neweggs specs arent correct. All so far have come with all 16 pipes factory unlocked according to riva, and memory speeds are 1100 factory default. Its simply an underclocked Ultra.

Ultra hardware, 1.6ns memory at 1100mhz, and all pipes factory unlocked, theres no reason to buy something else for this price.

Just installed the new Omega Drivers based on the Nvidia 61.77 drivers. They give you a choice during installl for performance or quality. My graphics quality is now better than it has ever been. The detail in games is amazing.
