I can

I can do it but keep it to a minimum. Mostly family/friends/coworkers.

I'd rather spend my time on side work doing network, server, and security stuff.

I do it about twice a year, pretty easy. It's like legos only with wires and moving parts

If you are starting from scratch go with a AMD64, they are the gaming machines right now. The 64 bit cpus are about 10-15% better clock for clock versus AMD 32 bit cpus (TBred, Barton, Palimino). If you are upgrading, I would still go with the AMD64.

As for the AMD XP 3200, I would nix that for a AMD 2600 mobile. I just bought an AMD 2600 mobile, Abit NF7-S v2 mobo, 512MB PC3200 Corsair memory from newegg for $300+ couple weeks ago. I currently have it running at 225X10 with 2.5-2-2-7 memory timings using Merlins D25 UBR CPC OFF bios. I will turn it up more at soon as I get my Thermalright SP-97 heat fan going. Screenshot from when I had it cranked up to 2.595Ghz (Stock = 1.83ghz), but I didn't like the heat.

TDD-

What's the deal with the Mobile processors.. There is a lot of talk about using mobile 64's in the new DFI lanparty (754) MB..

What's the upside?

The upside is that they already come unlocked meaning the have wonderful overclocking abilities...And are cheaper the say a 3200 barton, and can easily reach it's speed and more!

All processors are created on the same line. They test the processors and the ones that can work at low voltage or power consumption are labeled mobiles. They test the rest to see how fast they can go and label them accordingly.

Mobile Bartons are unlocked multipliers from 12.5 down. Some mobos, Abit NF7-s v2 unlocks all the multipliers or a L12 mod can be done to unlock 13+ but it locks 12-. Sorry, I found the spec on newegg, my 2600 should be running at 166 * 11 = 1826 Mhz.

AMD XP-M 2600 @ $99
or
AMD XP 3200 @ $180

As for the AMD64 mobiles, I think I heard something about problems with the heat spreading missing. The desktop cpus have a heat spreader that covers the whole top of the cpu, the mobile doesn't. That makes a difference in the hieght compared to the heat sick. I am not total sure about the solution.

As fo AMD64 cpus, they are unlocked going down. Meaning, if it should be 200*10 then it will be unlocked from 10 down. If it should be a 200*11 then it will be unlocked from 11 down. This is due to AMD's cool and quite. When enabled, when the software determines that the cpu utilization is low for long enough, it turns down the multiplier and lowers the voltage to the cpu.

The 64bit processors are quite expensive still. I wanted to stay under $800. This isnt gonna be some overly badass gaming machine. I dont play LAN with it. I just play over the internet. I keep up just fine now with it, but my girlfriend wants a newer one then what she has, so i figured i'd give her mine and build a slightly better one

have any oldish stuff like Couterstrike?

Raven Shield, UT04, CS2? if i can find more lanparties in the area, i might be inclined to build a machine more suited for that.

We have a couple guys that like to play CS2. I like to play it, but I have very little experience playing it.

How do you set up these LAN parties???
How many people usually make it out?
Is it at your house?
Do you provide monitors, and stuff like that?
Or would I have to bring in my tower, kb, mouse, monitor??
And what would I need?
