Computer stupid!

As the title says, I'm not or will ever be great at computers. I just got dsl the other day. I got the upgraded 768/128 speed, but it just doesn't seem to be going much if any faster than my dialup, which sucked for speed. I tired to download a video earlier just to test the speed and I was only getting 40kbps. I got the sasser virus as soon as I hooked up, but was able to get rid of that.

I know this is really vague info, but I was wondering if there was a setting or something that I may be overlooking on my comp causing this problem. If you guys could just try and shoot me in the right direction, I'll be able to check it out in the morning and give more info if on what I find. I'm using XP btw if that matters.

Once again, sorry about the lack of info and if you can't give any advice from the given info, I understand.

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and I tried the tech support for the dsl and they are even dumber than I am, so no help.

40kbps ain't bad and sure should be the crap out of dial-up. No real secret settings on a machine. There are tweaks, but otherwise there should be nothing. I would verify your cabling is good. For starters and you could try using some of the speed testing sites on the net.

Also remember that the Internet as a whole can experience degraded speeds depending on locations and time. Plus, if you are trying to download stuff from a site that is popular, during peak hours you could notice slower speeds.

I know my answers were vague, but it all depends on what your trying to do, where and how.

Take care,
Ceyko

Thanks for the help. I was actually only getting 4 kbs. Typed it wrong. Anyway, went to a speed test site and found that it was really running slow. Scanned for viruses and found 14. Got rid of them, and it is doing much better. Thanks for the info.
