problem with audio conversion

I bought a reel to reel deck to make some cd's of the old tapes I have, 60's chuck berry, wolfman jack live, ect.
I connect the aux output jacks on the recorder to my line in on my sound card, lots of distortion and muffled cd, with the sound menu where I control the line in volume, I can't turn it down enough to get it out of the red. I think the aux output from the recorder is to much power for the line in jack on the computer, how do I lower the audio signal into the computer. Do they make a rca jack type attenuator to go between the two?

yes, i sell them, they are about 20$

or you can make one with a couple pots and a pair of RCA's.

nah, i am talking a stereo circuit, so it would look like this.

Left RCA-signal + (pot) back to signal +
Right RCA-signal + (pot) back to signal +

catch my drift?

in RCA, the inner connector is the positive, in a phono connection, the tip is L, the middle band is R, and the base of the connector is Ground, IIRC.

like this

this represents one connector with fixed resistors
signal is center post
I don't know why they would load the output with a 2k resistor parallel

If I used a pot, what ohms ?

SIGNAL >----2k----------+----> SIGNAL
|
2k
|
GROUND ------------------+----- GROUND

Thanks
