I need some thoughts on anti virus programs...

My Norton anti virus is about to expire. I have been talking with some geeks here at work and they say a router is the best way to go. They also told me that all the people that work at the anti virus companies more than likely got hired because they had at one time or another they had developed a virus themselves. In a nut shell...........the antivirus companies are still creating the viruses in order to keep the business going. I guess it makes a little since...................but what are your thoughts on this?

soudns feasible...

As far as software packages, I'd go with AVG. Picks up trojans that Norton and McAfee consistently miss...and it's FREE.

Ok I'll look into it, but there wasn't a reg key that came w/ the package I got from the above site.

you have to fill out a form and request the code.... make sure you downloaded the free version and not the corporate version.

Ideally you want both a hardware router/firewall and also a software antivirus/firewall on each machine behind the hardware router. The software firewall stops some of the "calling home" that software seems to do nowadays and serves as another layer of defense behind the hardware firewall. The current norton internet security 2004 is quite the piggy hog on all of my machines; you'll need a fast processor and lots of memory to run it.

A router is a must but a decent antivirus package is just as important. Any one of the ones mentioned all do a fine job. It's mostly personal preference as they all do about the same job.

As for the conspiracy theory, it's just that. That rumor's been going around since the 80's and it's still crap.
