However, if you prefer to be able to surf the web and not have to worry about popups spyware malware security holes, crappy code etc... Then mozilla wins hands down...

the choice is yours my friend.

EDIT replaced firefox with mozilla.

Install Mozilla and then make your own decision. "Better" is subjective.

Trey: You whine an awful lot about how IE sucks. I don't think I've seen a single post from you in the last several months that hasn't been anti-microsoft in someway.

Give it up. We get it, you don't liek MS. Big fucking deal. Get over it.

I have used Mozilla and dont like it at all. If I was to use something other than IE it would be Firebird.

If by Mozilla you mean Mozilla FireFox... then yes.

Better may be subjective as far as personal aesthetic preference... but Mozilla is certainly better in the security department than IE. And FireFox is faster than both, hands down.

FireFox is based on the Mozilla code, but because it's less bloated than Mozilla, it's actually faster at surfing. Where Mozilla is an entire suite (browser, email client, and web development), FireFox is JUST the browser. Thunderbird is JUST the email client.

I never have a problem with IE and it's just as fast imo. I don't even get pop ups to be honest with you except for the weather site i goto and i surf a lot. Don't even have pop up blockers.

We've had users try mozilla ,and get some funky shit.

for example, a guy called me today ,saying that even after clearing cache and cookies, if he goew to fedex or american's website, our registration page (www.ze-net.com) still comes up.

EVEN IF HE'S OFFLINE........

Mozilla aint what i'd term "perfect" by a long shot.

I dont like IE, Microsoft has 2 things that I don't think will ever be matched by antyhign linux has to offer, that is Exchange Server & Active Directory (not to mention permissions kick ass on NT compared to *nix.)

I dont like MS's stance with IE being 100% built into the OS.

besides im not whinning.. he asked an open question.. i gave an open answer.

MoonDog, most people do not keep their machines up-to-date, I never had the problem.. but I have family call every other week needing their computers fixed because of popups spyware homepage hijackers etc....

I know it happens dude, I get them calls also. Knowledge is key. If a person knows what they are doing 9 times out of 10 they wont have any problems.

First, I'd be interested in knowing why he's trying to go to FedEx or American's webpages ... while he's offline.

Second... did you check to make sure he didn't set his home page, by accident, to your page? I dunno offhand what the key combo is to set home page to current page, but it's possible he may have hit it.

Though I'm still curious why he's trying to surf the web... while he's offline.

Third, no one's ever said Mozilla is perfect. But it's certainly a better choice than IE if you're at all concerned about security. I've been using FireFox exclusively for about 8 months now, and have never experienced any "quirkiness" in the way it operates. Fresh install, it's fast and stable. Installed a few extensions to increase it's usability beyond what IE could ever hope to be (unless MS ever get's off there ass).

Just trying to make a point, thats all. If Microsoft was so unsecure then there would be no problem hacking into my stuff. Apparently there IS a problem because I have never had anyone get in yet.

Have you ever sniffed your outgoing traffic? Even on a patched, virus scanned box, I always see random traffic going out to misc hosts usually with spyware/malware information in the packets. Just because you think your box is secure, doesnt mean it is.

You'd be amazed on how much shit gets sent out. I closed everything and was still sending out a steady stream of 1kb per second to some fucking spyware host regarding my browsing prefrences After I did some network troubleshooting, my windows box runs like new, and its been on the same install for almost 2 years now!

Yes, the NT Kernel and other various drivers and services always sends out packets to wherever. I block all outgoing and incoming traffic with my firewall unless I specifically request it.

You can Right Click + Open Link In New Tab

Also you can install extensions. Tabbrowser Preferences is a pretty comprehenisve set of preferences for tabbed browsing.

Basically Mozilla is FireFox & Thunderbird with a good amount of extensions pre-installed. With FireFox/Thunderbird, all you have to do is open the extension's applet (FireFox 0.9+: Tools > Extensions, FireFox/Bird 0.8-: Tools > Options > Extensions (Also for Thunderbird)), and click on "Get More Extensions" or "Get New Extensions". It'll open a page where you can browse the official and approved extensions.

You can also go to http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/ and http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/extensions/

These sites were the original location of the approved/official extensions. For some reason the new extensions site is missing some of them ... like the "Tabbrowser Preferences" one, for instance. (Or WAS missing them ... looks like they're on there now.) The original site is, I guess, only approved for up to version 0.8.x, where the new site is for 0.9 and above.

I'd also be interested in knowing why yours uses so much Josh. I have 8 tabs open right now, and still under 60 megs memory usage on FireFox. When I first open FireFox with only the initial tab going ot Gmail, it only uses about 20 megs.

IE uses 32 megs on my machine, with just a blank page. I don't have MyIE installed on this machine, so I can't test that.

However, I'm using XP, and I know XP's memory management/usage is better than 2000, in my experience. Especially if you turn off all the extra graphical "features" that are new to XP.

IExplorer w/ Explorer
18,780K of memory usage
22,696K of virtual memory

Firefox
23,776K of memory usage
15,605K of virtual memory

Firefox loads pages much faster for me, perhaps because it uses more physical memory than virtual memory, and running comparisons with a bunch of different sites seems to agree with me. I'm not going to lie, when on a windows box I pretty much use internet explorer, its not that bad as I'm not a fucking idiot and I know how to keep a windows box decently secure. Firefox still has a ways to go ( same for linux ) to be able to compete effectively in the desktop world, its really hard for them to compete when 9 out of 10 plugins are designed for internet explorer, and IE is integrated so well into the operating system.

However, when I'm on a linux box, I have a much easier time browsing websites with mozilla/enlightenment setup than I do when I am on a windows/ie6 setup. Tabbed browsing, and all the plugins configured correctly may have taken me a few hours to setup, but its well worth it as i don't have to close IE because of script attempts that try to hijack my browser, messed up java code that crashes it, and just in general pop ups that google toolbar misses ( rare ). I also get pissed off on my home computer when I hit a site that's obviously got script shit to try and hijack my browser, crashes ie, and crashes all the other windows that I had open, and even restart that fucking task bar. IE is a big exploit to me because of that integration, but I'll continue to use it on a windows box because like MoonDog, I'm behind plenty of protection to not really worry about it.

I actually use Slimbrowser. Granted, it uses IE as its base browser but it is what IE really should be. Built in pop up blocker (very good, almost to good), tabbed browsing, auto login, quick search, script error suppression, the ability execute java script or VB script in the context of the active site, the list goes on and on.

IE is far from perfect and is just a basic browser. Microsoft will probably never really make it much better since they already have it in the hands of millions of users.
