Hard drive issues

monday night my hard drive died.

noticed the computer started getting slower and slower past few weeks. then finally started making a strange whirling sound with a click.

i started transfering pics that are not replaceable, then tried to get my videos and other goodies.. but hard drive finally would do anything. gave up and did a re-boot, wouldnt even get to windows start up screen.

my question is this. who can retrieve my data off my dead hard drive? is this something compusa can do? or smaller shops? i got the really important stuff off, everything else is videos i have collected in the past year, and game saves, etc.

im going to send my computer back to voodoo anyway to have it upgraded to more current specs in preparation for the new generation of games(half life2 and doom3)

If you've got the click of death, then pretty much nothing short of sending it to a recovery house will get the data back. That can cost several thousand dollars, depending on how much data is to be recovered.

One thing you can try, is stick the drive in the freezer for about 15 - 30 minutes, then quickly put it back in the computer, and try to boot. You might get some functionality out of it for a few minutes, allowing you to back up some more stuff. If that doesn't work, you're pretty much shit out of luck.
