Coworker's computer screwed up, again...

i completely reformated his hard drive and started over...it worked fine for a few weeks, but now he has some spyware, on it, that i can't get off! i tried, "Adaware" and "Spybot", but they both don't do anything. it basically, just takes over his home page and sets it to some spyware search page with tons of pop-ups. i tried hijackthis, and it worked, but now that program won't work anymore...i think that something has blocked me from it, or something. anyway, is there anything else, out there, to try to get all of that crap off of there? that seems to be all that it is, and the rest of the computer still works great. it's a windows 2000 professional machine, btw, and i installed all of the patches that the windows website recommended...

take away his pc. see where he has been going on the internet.

chastise him then give the pc back.

Tell him next time he gets to wipe it on his own.

I had some users actually pull down virus files from a website that was infected. It all got quarantined but I have seen it happen.

lol, must be fun to manage that tard farm my mom and sisters consistently open unsolicited email, download anything that happens to have a hyperlink, and use their real name and address in anything they can put it in, and think of disk defrag and disk cleanup as uneccessary.

End up having to reformat and/or fix their comp at least 1-2 times a month. They are getting better though, slowly but surely.

he's just an older guy, and he's only been using a computer for a few years. well, that and his brother, which is in the same boat, forwards e-mails, to him, on a daily basis...and i think that he's getting a lot of the crap from those e-mails! he really doesn't go on any bad sites, just gun sites...he's a gun fanatic! anyway, is there anything out there, that will get rid of this program? his homepage is still some pop-up laden advertising thing. everytime i change it, it just changes back. adaware and spybot, both, can't seem to find anything.

if this guy needs web access and email word processing etc... and doesnt need any windows only apps.. you need tp put linux on that damn thing. he can look at all the gun porn he wants and he will get no spyware/malware virus's etc. all you have to do is not give him the root password.

http://www.linuxiso.org I would recommend mandrake 10 for newbs,.

That's called System Restore, and I don't believe W2K has it. I could be wrong tho.. or maybe you can pick up an app online that could do it.

As for the start page constantly changing back to "casinomagic.com" or somesuch.. you'll probably have to do a registry hack to get it out. DO NOT jack with the registry if you don't have any experience or anyone around you with experience!

Do a search through the registry for that address. When you find it, pay attention to the key it is in. If it's related to the website, delete the WHOLE key. Otherwise just delete the value. Then go into Internet Options and change it back to something you want (WITHOUT opening IE !! - sometimes that is enough to get it to reset itself!). Also remove all Program Files that are related to "bad" sites. You may need to kill some Processes that are accessing the files before you can delete. Use Spybot to immunize the thing. You should be a-okay after that.

also remove everything from the RUN key in the registry too

Yeah, I hear either one of those would work wonders.

i guess that i'm going to have to format and install AGAIN!!! i've tried every virus scan, and nothing will work. norton says that some .dll file is missing, and when i try to re-install it, it says that the file is full... so, i tried to install a free version of several other virus scans, and it won't let me...errors just pop up! i hate fucking computers! when i get that piece of shit back up, i'm going to install a software firewall, two virus softwares set to scan twice a day, immunize the thing with spybot, set it to check for windows updates twice a day, and only allow him to access his mail server's address! i'm not even the computer guy...i'm just the guy that knows the most, about computers, here...which is fucking scary! ...excuse my french, as they say...i'm about to check myself into a mental institution, over here!
