Ok..I am getting sick and tired of the spam...

I am with charter (cable internet) and I use outlook express as my mail receiver. I have the mail rules implied .......but they just keep coming. I need something that will weed out the spam stuff and but allow my bill notifications to come thru. Is there anything free outhere that works. Or is there a better way to utilize something on out look express that I am missing? Thanks for your help.

I used Charter too. I have been getting spam too. I pre-screen my email using the http site at http://mail.charter.net/ Then I delete everything I don't recognize. I wish charter had a cleaner in their server that we could turn on rules for.

How many penis enhancements do I need?

Spam is going to happen. This has a good spam filter built in, and if it misses something, you can manually mark it as junk and it won't miss it again (and vice versa, if it junks something you wanted to keep (ie: bills) you can manually mark it as "not junk" and it won't make the same mistake the next time it comes in)

Beyond that, take my advice from the previous thread ... delete the account(s), and create a new one (obviously for bills and stuff, you'll have to make the necissary changes with them so they'll go to the new email address) for personal use only. Then create another one for use on websites/forums/mailing lists, etc.

Basically, if you ever put your email onto any webpage, or in any database, even on trusted sites ... be prepared to get spam. If you only use one email account, you're going to get spam, no matter what you do. You have to create multiple email accounts, if you want to keep your personal email account free of spam. One for personal use (or more if you're so inclined) and one or more for use when signing up for stuff online (like forums, mailing lists, etc), or when making online orders, etc.

Damn it.........can you have more than one email address with charter? I don't see it. You know for extra frills.............CHARTER SUX!

BTW........Starting next month charter will have a virus and firewall protections at no cost for the 3mb customers only. Supposably the spam filters are coming also........later in the year.

Here is one of the spam feed backs

Geek 10-Jun-2004 08:20:46 PM
"Works great"
I loaded this today and no problems as with some of the negative reports. I have been up and running all day. This is fabulous for outlook. Now I can configure my rules to take the spam right to the trash or in a spam folder for viewing. The white list automatically keeps track of email addresses detected as spam and allows you to simply transfer them onto a safe list if they are not spam. I even designated a funny sound to play when my mail is dumped into the spam folder.

What kind of filters do you have running on your server?

And SSMAN, if Charter only allows for one email address, then you could always use webmail accounts for your junk filters.

I couldn't say for sure, as I haven't used it myself. But personally I'm leary of any freeware program that has anything to do with "fighting" spam, pop ups, etc. Unless I have prior experience with the company that produces the program, I usually avoid them until it's confirmed to be free of any spyware. Pretty much the same for any freeware in general, but it's been my experience that those free programs that supposedly fight spam and pop-ups usually have spyware included. It's like trading one evil for another

yeah free anti-spam software will reward you with spyware or adware.

there is at least one company that will auto reply to incoming emails with a request to reply back by clicking a link. This causes that person to get added to your whitelist, proving it's a real person and not some spam. Only after that do the emails from that person get delivered to you.

I believe something like this should be scriptable in outlook, but maybe not. If you have a linux machine or something that is running a mail server of some sort, there is code out there for free that will handle this for you in this manner. In that case you'd use this mail server as your mail server in outlook, and it would be configured to check mail on the actual mail server.

Loaded the above program...........took the computer a long time to reboot. When it did .......I always have my computer on selective start up (XP) to save some time. (not to mention a ton of pop ups). Then I open my mail box and already had spam in it. I just checked it less than a minute before. Oh.......well. I adjusted some settings........shut down.......takes for ever to come back up.........and I get a "Runner Error" box that says " Invalid backweb application id 137903"

So I removed the program.........and still got the runner error box. Said the hell with it and restore it to yesterday. Working fine now. I would have to rate this accordingly........................

{farting sound when toungue comes out}
