explain your network a little more.. how many computers... is thier a host machine.. dial-up internet, cable dsl.. etc..

you cant really share internet with just a hub... you will need extra configurations on the machines.

2 computers, cable internet, one hub. I dont see why it wouldnt work. I can play my xbox over the internet through the hub and my computer. It goes from my cable modem, to hub, and one port goes to one computer and another port goes to the other one.

how many ip address do you have with your cable internet.... they normally limit the amount of ip address you can have unless you have a router that does NAT

this came off of Charters.net website

Do you support home networking?
No, we currently support one computer per cable modem

so does this mean i need to have a router? But it still wouldnt work when i went straight from the modem to the computer

You are not getting an ip address... I dont know how you get your xbox to connect hooked up (unless the xbox and your other computer are not hooked up at the same time)

But.. your best bet is to get a router.. you can get one for about 30-50 bucks. Well worth the cash.

cable modems suck (in this regard anyways)... unplug it for about 5 minutes... then hook it up to the second computer turn the cable modem back on... then turn the computer on.

Should work fine then.

all you need is a router, plus most usually provide sometype of a hard ware firewall...
