Angry Why does my PC freeze......

every few minutes or when I run 3 or more applications at one time, (ie.... MSN and outlook or Word, IE6 and MSN). It just freezes, mouse and pointer moves but can not click on anything, no ctrl+alt delete, nothing? I can not even run scandisk or defrag without it locking up within the first 2 minutes.
I am using a Compaq deskpro P3, 256mb ram, Win 98/SE, 9G Quantum Fireball hard drive.

Also how do I find out what each of the programs are and what are really needed to always be running? This is my task list when I hit ctrl+alt+del

Explorer
Mpftray
MSNmsgr
Verizoncontrolpad
Mpfagent
Motivesb
Msbb
Psfree

Thanks
Inclient
Ipmon32
Wzqkpick
Wmencagt
Mcagent
Loadqm
Lvcoms
Stimon
Systray

98se is one of your problems but thats another issue.

Run a search on your harddrive for each of those file names and it should give you the folder its in which would most likely explain what it is. Some of those are obvious.

Explorer.exe is what makes it windows. Without that you would have DOS

Systray is what makes all those little icons by the clock

wzqkpick is winzip's little quick pick thing. I'd kill this one
MSN is obviously your MSN client.
Verizon thing is probably for your DSL.

I'd look at upgrading to one of the MS OS'es that runs an NT kernel such as Win2k or XP

1974 El Camino SS - 400sb

You need to free up some of your system resources. Best way to increase your system resources is by removing programs that are running in your background.

Go to Start, Run, and type msconfig. Select the startup tab and uncheck anything that is not needed.
Go here if your not sure what all those programs are:

Startup Lookup

It also looks like u got some spyware on your computer. Download Adaware, update it, then scan your computer.

Don't blame it on windows 98 guys. I'm still running 98 mainly because I hate how slow 2000 and XP boot up and it never freezes on me. I have no problems running mutiple programs.

GREAT! I removed 5 of the start up items and it booted 2times quicker and gave me another 12% free in resources.
I think I am going to buy XP this weekend.

Thanks all!

Go with XP you won't regret it... your machine is plenty fast for it...the good thing about XP, programs can not crash the OS... the only way XP will crash is due to a driver conflict or something deeper... Good luck...

You must have one of those rare NTFS Windows 98 installs.

What XP version is better? This is for home PC that is normally used for surfing, school software, pictures, data base(small) and a couple of games.

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade
or
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OEM Version
or
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition

I agree with OneBadWagon, don't do an upgrade, you'll just inherit the problems you currently have with 98, only worse because now your trying to do them in XP.

Go with XP Pro, and add 256 more memory. Do all the OS updates first, then load your apps. Make sure that you have either a firewall or virus software on before performing updates because that's when a PC is most vulnerable.

-OR-

In Regedit, go to HLKM, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version, Run and then export those settings to save them. Then delete them all (in the RUN group) except the McAfee ones (your virus software).
Then reboot. Now that thing will fly.

HTH, YMMV,

Curtis

98 Rocks now...you give MS a good 6 years and they will debug the hell out of it : ) ...I have it on another machine runs damn nice...plus it is very easy to hack now as well so can custom alot of stuff...I like XP as well though alot easier to gain access to more of your computer

To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.
