P4 or Ath64?

So after the lan party I realized my stuff is gimpy as shit. So I'm thinking about building a new system. What do ya'll think. Going with a P4 3.0GHz or an Athalon 64 +3000?

I've always been a pentium fan myself, but for gaming I would go with the athlon right now... Im waiting until the 4ghz chips are released so I can pickup a P4 extreme cheap...

p4 is the way to go, hell, you are more than welcome to give my system a throttling, to see if it'd work for what you need,

so far all the athlon 64's i have seen are a joke, right now the best chipset is a VIA, so Nvidia hasnt even pulled its head out of its ass and fixed its junk.

and the multisocket thing is retarded, and there isnt much 64 bit software yet,

i would NOT buy a 64 until they decide which socket they are going to continue to use.

p4 all the way..
i have a 2.8 that is over clocked to 3.3 and owing to higher FSB it is faster then a "stock" 3.3 .
runs great.. 100% reliable and fast as fuck.

Man I feel like such a newb. Been a while since I've overclocked. What FSB are you running, Voltage, anything else? Also what are you using to keep it cool? What about the memory do you have to worry about the type of memory you have when you o/c?

fsb.. around a gig. dont remember off the top of my head.. voltage.. stock.. i didnt want to OC to where i had to push the voltage up to far.. HEat sink. SLK900 BAD ASS copper heat sink with a 80mm fan on top of it.
memory.. corsair XMS i think.. pc3200 .. bought it so it could handle up to 4 ghz if needed.

i would go onto the overclocking forum and check there.. LOTS of good info.

oced my amd and had a temp drop. from 34 to 32c. once I get faster memory, im going to 3400.

I would go with the 64bit. but theres not alot of shit that supports it out there. Youll have to run shitty Windows XP. yuck

AMD64 just demolishes even the fastest of P4's. Its like comparing a stock ls1 vs a stock 4.6GT

the second one that you posted, the MUCH more expensive 64bit athlon couldnt beat the 3.2 at stock speed, that isnt much of a good example is it?

and on the other one, the stock 3400+ and the stock 3.2 are within 5 fps of eachother, which one costs more, and is more upgradeable/ usable?

Gaming isnt really dependent on cpu speed anymore as much as it is on the bad assness of your video card. Anything over 2GHZ will play damn near any game out just fine.

Compare the prices:

Price Breaks:

$251 - Athlon 64 3200
$270 - Pentium 4 3.2GHz 800MHz

Top of the Line:

$859 - Pentium 4 3.2GHz 800MHz 2MB Extreme
$730 - Athlon 64 FX

P4 would probably have more room for overclocking if thats your thing, I would never overclock a AMD, they are fast enough stock.

Anyway, for what I use a PC for, the AMD64 would suit my needs WAY more so than a P4.

the p4 EE is a joke, the p5 will be out soon enough, but i can tell you this first hand, i have been MUCH happier with my p4 than with my AMD.
