Please help with PC/Printer problems

I installed a used printer (worked previously..was my sisters) on my home PC. I downloaded all drivers (HP) from the net and installed them. My old printer was connected to my PC via a USB port. The new/used printer I installed only has a connection to use my LPT1 port. Every time I send a print, I'll get an
error saying "problems with connections to LPT1 port..make sure your printer is setup to run on this port" Would could be the problem. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thx,
T.C.

I'm running Windows ME..

Your first problem is that you're running ME...j/k

This usually means that the cable connection is not good, the printer is turned off, or that it's not set to use that port...
Go to the properties of the printer and you should have a ports tab...be sure that the LPT1 box is checked.
Sometimes you just need to remove and reinstall it or reboot the conputer. Hope this helps.

...

i know, i have xp, but haven't installed it.
i've done what you have said about unplugging it, then reconnecting..computer will usually say you have a new device, etc, etc. i go to properties and the printer has LPT1 as the port. i'll try the HP help section to see if i can figure the problem. thanks for your help.
