A windows box can be fast and useable and be locked down pretty tight.

Both Linux and Windows in the proper hands can be configured to perform pretty similarly. Windows boxes are more prone to having extra shit on them but if you configure the network right, policies, and the registry then you can get it pretty tight.

Both systems out of the box need some work and both take time to harden.

I've honestly never seen a site that runs windows/iis/asp/mssql that has even came close to having as quick a response time with linux/apache/php/mysql.

Can you show me a site thats pretty quick with an entire windows solution? I'm really intrested in seeing which of the two setups can generate the same content faster.

I know when I load my site ( dfwls1.com on a local network ) it generates dynamic content WAY faster than any site I've ever seen. Compared to our win2k box, its embarassing how slow IIS is.

There are a ton of linux distro's that are secure as hell out of the box, slackware for example. Of course, Win2k3 is supposed to be pretty good.

You can run apache, php, and mysql also on a windows platform. I have setup up php and mysql with iis.

2003 Server with iis6 is like night and day from iis5. 2003 the os itself runs much faster than 2000 and xp.

Both have their place and I use both whenever I can. I just hate people that start completely bashing either side which usually tends to be windows.

If you are just building a web server a MS platform can be built pretty solid. If you shut off any unnecessary ports and protocals on the interface then that locks down a lot and there are tons of documents on how to secure windows. Granted its not as nice as an out of the box linux distro or a good old bastille script but it can be done.

After having spent over 6 years as a full time admin with probably 60-70% MS and the other various unix and linux I consider myself to be a pretty good middle ground in the windows vs linux debate.

After seeing both a windows and a linux box after being compromised and having to write up both reports for the FBI to prevent equipment from being seized I've gotten to know both worlds pretty well.

My arguement is a Linux 2.6 on a RieserFS would operate tons faster than any version of windows on ntfs at delivering dynamic web content. I'm willing to put up money ( if applicable! ) on this and my server as the guiena pig.

I'm not trying to dog anyones skill here, just trying to find a comparable spec server with two opposite os admins at the helm.

I'll see what I can come up with. I worked for a .com a few years ago that was doing dynamic content caching of web sites and used to be involved with stress testing most of the major platforms at the time.

I'm an admin on a 3mb pipe and in the process of setting up an automated loan web based app with a 2k3 web server front end and a sql 2000 back end.

The iis box is a 2.4g xeon 512mb ram and 80gb ide drives mirrored.

The sql box is also 2k3 with a 3.06g xeon 2gb ram and 4 36gb ultra 320 raid 5.

each server is directly connected to its own interface on the firewall. I'll let you know once its live if you want to test it out.

I'm not out to knock anyone either. Your obviously very knowledgeable in this stuff. I'm just in a weird spot since I'm one of the few ppl I know that goes both ways on windows and linux. My strengths are on windows but I maintain the aix 5.1 side of our stuff, I built our red hat based IDS, and I found a few bugs for our vendor of our intrusion prevention box that is bsd based.

Comes with the territory of being a jack of trades but master of none

I'm sure I'd have a blast getting to meet with ya and talk shit over a few beers
