What do you think i could get for this?

I have a desktop but i need a laptop for school and convenience. Just wondering what you guys think i could get for what i have.

Dell Dimension 8100
Pentium 4, 1.3ghz
512mb RDRAM
2 40 gig hard drives
16x DVD drive
16x4x10 CDRW
19" Monitor
Believe there is still warranty left on parts

Fuck idk what else do you need to know.

All i need in a laptop is something decent... i want it to be great quality (but i dont need dell), i also want it to be a bit faster (as i would always like to upgrade)...

Speaking of laptops... ive never been able to understand the screens. What is the best screen you can get for a laptop... and what is the worst? What would you recommend? Thanks!

I'd think you could at least get 200-300 for the box and maybe 100 for the 19"

Dell had their inspiron 1100 laptops for the low 6s.

I've got one that I use for my side computer consulting work and its fine for that.

Back when I got mine I spent $911 for 2g celeron, 256mb ram, 15" screen, 20gb hd, 24xcd/cdrw/dvd combo drive.

Its not the lightest of laptops but is pretty much an entry level unit. Shared video memory and they now have 2.4 celerons but I honestly cant tell much difference in performance between it and my optiplex gx150 p3 933 with 512mb ram.

Good luck in your search.

Yeah sorry, you were dreaming. You can buy new systems about the same as yours, and faster, for around 400-500.

Dell has got:

2.66mhz
256mb RAM
40gig HD
5.1 audio
CD|RW or DVD drive
15" flatt screen LCD

$499

So I'd say your system would probably be worth maybe $100-150 or so.

The newer version of yours the 8300 with the low end 2.8g p4, with hyper thread, 512 ram, 80gb drive, dvd and 48x cdrw, 19" monitor, 128mb geforce 5200 video prices out around 1400 and there is a coupon for 200 off of 1499 systems so you end up around 1300 for a box with a faster burner, video, and twice the cpu for that price.

You might check ebay and see what similar boxes are going for there.

What, did I bruise your ego? WAKE UP. Your computer is old.

The computer i quoted wasn't supposed to "beat" your machine, but it was supposed to compare what an Average Joe can get today and clue you in that old computers aren't worth jack shit.

Yours might have 80gb, 512mb and both a RW or DVD, but it is still 2 years old (in other words obsolete) and questionable on warranty. And dismissing the processor out of hand? You really don't know a damn thing do you?

The computer I quoted has full warranty, up to date technology (CPU and monitor) and can easily be brought "up" to matching each part on your system starting at $499. After matching everything I bet the box would be at about $650-$700.

If you want opinions on how much your system is worth, then don't fucking argue the details. If you have to ask the question in the first place, that means you don't know what you are fucking talking about. Arguing without knowledge is just one step above a kneejerk "nuh-UHHHH!" and makes you look like a fool.

Sorry ranger.. but i have to agree with him... 200 is probably the max you are going to be able to get for it... Im fairly certain as well.. that a 2.6 celeron will run quicker than a P4 1.3... but thats just me and my opinion...
