Question Removing desktop icons

Yes, I know this is a retarded question.

I want to remove some icons from my desktop. How do I do that, and in doing so will it remove the program? I don't want to remove the entire program....just the unused icon.

Also, I want to remove some icons from the little bar at the bottom. Help! I'm on Windows 98 if that helps anything.

I've marked what I want to remove with a red X or a red dot....

If the icon is a shortcut, it will have a little arrow in the bottom left hand corner of the icon, you can just right-click, delete it
w/o deleting the program

And, on your taskbar, if you hit start, run, and type "msconfig", a window will pop up. click on the furthest right tab, "Startup". There you can unckeck the boxes which you do not want to start with windows. just MAKE SURE and uncheck only those things, cause some of the stuff will mess with your computer if it doesnt start with windows.
