Need help! Notebook won't boot from cd

I bought a laptop from someone on this sight last week. Got the hard drive completely cleared, deleted all partitions. Now I am trying to load XP but it wont boot from the CD ROM. I have it selected to boot from the cd rom in the bios but it still wont. Its a dell inspiron 2650. Called dell but they wont help me because im not the originall owner. Does anyone have ANY suggestions?

Thanks!

cole

i knew his first name, and the dell guy acted like it was correct. I am trying to get ahold of the previous owner to see if we cant change the name on the contract.

Anyways, when i try from the cd, the cd rom light doesnt even come on. Which isnt right. Im gonna look for an old dos floppy disk and see if i cant get in from there.

Do you have a floppy drive? My computer is a big pain in the butt about booting to a CD, so I made bootable floppies for XP. It takes 6 disks but it actually works for me so I don't mind. Here is what you need and instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/default...NoWebContent=1

'98 Camaro SS: Incon twin turbo. Sold
'99 Camaro SS: Heads/cam/bolt-ons. Sold.
'91 Camaro RS: Stock.

2010 Camaro SS: Hell yes.

yeah, i made some of those and they worked pretty good.....almost. Well, the floppies worked, but after i put in the xp disc and created a partition, an error came up and said it was missing a file and could not continue. It forced me to restart. So now it wont let me boot from a disk floppy or even really do anything. It shows the DELL screen, then goes to a screen and says, "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart" It gets better though It says this when there are no discs in it, and when i press any key, it just repeats itself and doesnt restart. I dont know what the hell to do now

That's odd...it shouldn't matter WHAT's on the hard drive if you are using a boot disk. Did you put disk 1 back in? And is the floppy drive still set to be first in the boot order?

yep, it doesnt even try to read the floppy, just goes straight to "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart."

just curious.. do you have an original XP cd?? I have never been able to boot to a burned windows 2000/XP cd... I have to use floppies.. however orignal ones boot just fine.

just a thought.. maybe try installing win98 or something.. then upgrading to xp??

sent the info off to my brother who has worked at dell for over 5 years doing desktop to server support.

I'll post if I get any ideas from him.

PM service tag info and I'll see if we can get the warranty/support info fixed.

What does it do when you have no disks in any drives? Maybe the floppy drive needs to be removed (or disconnected) and plugged back in?

When i have no disks in, it does the same thing. A friend of mine has it right now to see if he cant figure something out. I'll try that when i go and get it.

Stang2be, Ill get the service tag number when i get it too, That would be great.

Thanks

No worries, got it working. Stupid me for trying to get xp working with FAT32. Also, i think the cd rom maybe on its last leg which could have been why it wouldnt boot from the cd but who knows.
Im working a few people to get the contract changed too so maybe dell will be able to help me out with the cd rom problem.

Thanks for everyones help!
