Question Need help setting up a wireless network in XP

I've got 3 computers at home, 2 (laptop and desktop) of which connecting with an 802.11b cards through a D-Link Router/WAP. Internet connection is not a problem but I need help setting up a network to share files across the various computers.

I tried setting it up using the XP Wizard and it creats a Floppy Disk with instructions to run it on all computers but that fucks up my wireless connection and adds a MAC Bridge. Can't connect or do anything until I remove the MAC Bridge. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'll check what all my dad is using but I had helped him setup an 802.11g network at home but not sure how many xp boxes he has.

Are you on XP home or pro?

I think all his may be pro.

I need to double check on the limitations of xp home. I know it is in the networking function of it.

Hmmm, so you have the internet connection back working now or do you need help with that? If so, all you should have to do is to right click on a folder, select "sharing and security" or something like that (sorry, not on a XP machine) and select the option where it says just share it, not any wizards.

Can you ping your other computers on the network?

jose.. what exactly happens when you try to connect to another computer.. and how are you connecting to it??

if internet is shared.. you should be able to connect to another machine with no problem

OK, here is the setup. Running WinXP Home on a Desktop in another room using a Netgear 802.11b card, Laptop running WinXP Home, and my main Desktop in my bedroom where the cable modem and router are running WinXP Media Center. I used the XP Network Setup Utility and it creats a floppy disk and says to put the floppy in ever computer and run it. That screws up everything and I lose wireless connectivity and it installs a MAC Bridge. I'm not sure what the MAC Bridge does and I have to do a system restore to get my connection working again.

Can anybody provide a clue or some step by step instructions on what to do? Is it even possible to do file sharing between all 3 computers on a wireless connection?

if sami hasnt already helped you... dont use the xp network setup wiz... its designed to set you up.. if you have nothing at all setup. Which from what it sounds like you are already networked together..

open a command prompt (start/Run cmd.exe)
type in

net view

if you can see your other machines listed... then all you have to do is share out a directory to be able to connect to it..

you can also see what you get through network neighborhood

OK, I did that last night and I see my Desktop in my room and my living room but not the laptop. I shared out a couple of folders and refreshed Network Neighborhood but didn't see either. Figured it might need a reboot but I was to tired and never turned it back on. I'll check tonight or tomorrow and post back up. Thanks for the help everybody.
