Only if you want to support the latest shit, and have a faster kernel which means faster OS. Dont worry about it if you have to ask if you should update

We run 2.6pre9 on our sniffing box, it works without a hitch.

cool. Not that I need it for newer support. I'm using an old 8U HP 550 Xeon box to do my sniffing. Most there for compliance on regulations for financial institutions and my work was too cheap to buy an ids so I just built one out of the old exchange server

We use ours for bandwidth tracking and to pinpoint bandwidth hoggers on our 250+ server network. Ours is a 2u rack mount with a atx motherboard, its a 2200XP with slackware and a 40GB drive in it, 'sigh' I just love linux

We just got done upgrading most our servers, 2 run linux the other 6 are openbsd. Most of them now are gigabyte 2200 or 2400xp's, but I know of two 166's that do our dns

i went ahead and did it....

[email protected]:~$ uname -r
2.6.0
[email protected]:~$

it was pretty simple to do... i feared upgrading it at first.. but made it through.. and would have no problems doing it again (not to mention i had to recompile 10 diffren't times cause i missed little crap like smbfs etc...)
