Windows XP serial port problems

I have a dell laptop at work that has windows 2000 on it and the serial ports worked great. I use the serial port to access PLC's from Allen Bradley.

Now, with the upgrade, the software cannot connect to the serial port. It gives me an error about some other app might be using the port.

I know the PLC is good and so is the cable/software. I have a second laptop (Identical, with 2000 still on it) and I was able to connect and get the job done.

Any tips on what is happening?

Mark

first of all.. consider getting a usb connector for whatever it is you are trying to hook up (not sure what a PCL is, im assuming it is like a pda)

second.. if you have to have serial port.... check your device manager.. and see how many serial ports are installed, typically there should be com1, com2, and lpt1, if you only have a com1, install another com port from the addhardware wizard.. then retry. If you have 2, you might as well try adding another one...

third... check and see what com port your modem is on... try disabling the modem from the device manager, and see if you can use your PCL

fourth.. if you have an external mouse hooked up.. disconnect it and try again.

serial port issues suck.... i recommend usb or firewire
